    Hi,

I tried searching for this but my browser didn't want to let me. So sorry if this has been asked before. I want to create a cheap media PC, I have a old laptop that I am going to use, but there is no dvi/ s-video/ tv-out.

    So my questions are:

    1) Will a dvi(f)-vga(m) adapter work. I know that dvi --> vga will work. but will vga --> dvi work?

    and

    2) Do the vga to RCA cables work. I thought that due to colour setups they require a converter not just a cable. I've seen cables on Ebay that also have audio components (?) which makes me think they are useless.

    Thanks for any help

    Tok

VGA to DVI will work as long as the TV's DVI input is the DVI-I type which consists of DVI-D {Digital} and DVI-A {Analogue}. If it supports DVI-A then the signal is analogue all the way through and a VGA to DVI adapter will work.

If the TV's DVI input is DVI-D only (which was common on some TV's) then VGA to DVI will not work unless you buy a very expensive signal converter.

HDMI is also pure digital so analogue connections will not work.

VGA to component does work & is frankly your only cheap option, they can be a bit fiddly so some messing around with resolutions settings may or may not be required.

VGA to composite and s-video also exist if your TV does not have component inputs but the picture quality wont be as good.

In regards the signal conversion for VGA-component that should not be a problem as long as you have a semi-recent enough GPU in the laptop, if it does not or has something very old then you may very well need a signal converter.
