    Hi All

Heading on a 3 week trip to the States. Flying with one friend to New York on the 6th of October. Heading to Boston at some stage (by bus?) and then flying from there to San Francisco on the 13th.

Meeting up with 3 other mates at this stage. We have flights home booked on the 27th of October from LA. Plan was to rent a car, drive to Vegas then onto LA.

Anyone know any good (nice/cheap) places to stay in any of the cities? Any "must see" places in SF and LA you guys know about? Also any attractions to see on the drive from SF - LV - LA?

    Thanks in advance.

In SF try the Renoir Hotel (google it). It's near the center and v. cheap. Only thing which *may* bother you is that it's marketed sometimes as a gay hotel (I'm straight, stayed with another girl and had no probs). It's cheap and cheerful and realistically all you are going to do is sleep there anyway.

In Vegas if you want to stay near the main drag for cheaps I'd try Circus Circus or the Riviera. I stayed at the Riviera and it's grand for the money. If you're wiling to stay a little bit out try places like Sam's Town (of Killers fame lol).

In LA I stayed at the Royal Pagoda which from the outside looks like some motel from a slasher movie but inside it's fab AND it has parking. Again it's cheap and cheerful.

As for sightseeing....don't miss the Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam near Vegas! In San Francisco go for the Golden Gate Bridge (doh), Ghirardelli chocolate factory, Alcatraz & Fishermens Wharf.

If it's hostelling you're after, the Green Tortoise in SF is great, friendly staff etc, can't remember what the transportation was like, but it was central enough.

When you're heading to Vegas try to book your room well in advance, it'll save you a few bob.

Yosemite national park is on the way from SF to Vegas, but it's a bit of a detour, and it would need about 2 days at least for it to be worth it. Otherwise you could try to Grand Canyon which is near Vegas, you could do a helicopter/plane tour which I hear are good.
