Hi Folks, not sure if anyone can help me, but if you could point me in the right direction I would be most grateful.

My mother is travelling to Canada next year, but wants to cross the border into the US to meet up with some relatives who live in the US.

I have tried to ring the Dublin US Embassy but get an answering machine directing me back to the website or giving a german number which I cannot get through on to find out about these visas.

Somebody else said that if my mothers passport had a machine readable code on it then she wouldnt need the Visa anyways.

Has anybody done the same and what was required of you?

    thanks in advance

She just needs the passport as far as I know, machine readable and as long as she isn't staying for over 90 days.

Thanks Ruu, from the site its looking like that is correct, but I just wanted to be 100% sure.

This is a once in a lifetime trip for her and i would hate it to be ruined because we didnt research her arrangements first.

It should be ok, but be warned depending on which border post you use the border guards can be a little bit more aggressive than the airport ones. You get alot more questions and deeper scrutiny on your travel plans. Also there is a $12 fee which must be paid in cash and exact change only.

thanks Bond, so ideally she would need the name and full address of the people she is visiting then.

She is part of a group trip and will be going back to join them so I suppose she can prove that she will be travelling back with them.

    Appreciate the replies.

Because they are getting so paranoid about the borders, both Canada and Mexico, tell her to bring her return ticket which shows she is flying back to Ireland - just in case.

The things is there are so many new rules and regulations that from time to time you may run into an official who is confused and doesnt know them him or herself, so it's best to be covered.
