    Hello Big Kay,

I don't know anything about that club. I'd recommend posting up the area you live in (and areas where you can access easily) then you should also get responses re other clubs that may be handy for you.

Best thing then to do is try out a few different ones and decide what suits you. Have you any ideas what style you are interested in? Again, best is to have an open mind, try a few ones (the one you think you like the sound of the least may be the one you enjoy the most!) and see what works for you.

    Hope this helps...

I don't know that club so can't advise you on it, but you have a great resource here in that there are lots of people who have studied all different types of MA's.

It might be a good idea to tell us what you hope to get from a Martial Art and see what people advise, it might be Kung Fu, or it might not.

Thanks for the advice, I dont really have a major preference on the type of Martial art Id like to do, mainly Im looking for one thats good for self defence and keeping fit too. I have tried Aikido in the past but found that the club I went to wasn't very organised (maybe it was just me) but there didnt seem to be any structure in terms of who was at what level etc. Id like to join a club whereby its quite organised in terms of the training you have to do to to reach certain levels etc so that I know where Im going with it. Like I said my knowledge of the Martial; arts is limited from what I have seen i like the look of Kung Fu but thats based on purely observations. Any general advice would be appreciated, I remember someone mentioning a place to me that in he city centre, I think opposite the Central Hotel but Im not sure if its still around.

Hi Big Kay. Ive heard some good things about this Kung Fu school. There seems to be a number of classes in Dublin 8.

    http://www.choylayfut.eu/

Theres also Wing Tsun around Molesworth Street.

Alternatively, If you would like to try something totally different I currently train in an MMA school down in East Wall. What we do is based mainly on Kyokushin (full contact Karate) and Judo. If you want more info, you can give Shane a call. His number is at the bottom of our website www.mmaireland.com

Best of luck with your search.

    Big Kay,

If you're interested in keeping fit a martial art (or any sport) will give you a good intro and help you get physically active.

The "arts" that are best for this are those such as boxing, wretling, judo, muay thai, brasilian jiu jitsu and mixed martial arts. These arts have a strong competitive focus.

As a benefit, these arts are pressure testing in every class, so you're given instant, real time and realistic feedback on how well you handle a specific scenario. What they lack, by and large, is a belt structure as a goal in and of itself. Since progress in belts (in Judo and Brasilian Jiu Jitsu at least) is based on skill rather than a rigid criteria of techniques it may not be what you're looking for in terms of structure.

And now for the plug: If you can make it out to Dublin 24 I run an MMA/Sub Wrestling class Mondays & Wednesdays. You can check out www.spartanmma.com for more details.
