How to get proofreading/subbing experience

I'm happy with my job at the moment, but when it's time for a change I'd like to get into proofreading/subbing. It's something I have a natural skill at. The problem is that I have no real experience (apart from informally cleaning up some reports that my colleagues have written) and there don't seem to be any trainee jobs out there.

A relative of mine in America broke into the field by doing a course with a respected local media group with a placement programme. I've found nothing like that here, apart from a couple correspondence courses from British "schools" I've never heard of. Their certificates are pricey enough and I don't know if they'd carry any weight with the Irish media.

    Does anybody have any suggestions?
