Okay so it's my 21st soon. And I am considering spoiling myself with a new lens (but POSSIBLY new guitar pick-ups, not sure yet). I have an 18-55 f3.5 and a 50mm f1.8 canon lense for my digital rebel xt. I'm really missing out on the zoom, so was wodnering if you guys could recommend me a nice zoom for around €500? I know I havn't specified which focal length, but I'd be willing to consider a shorter focal length if it was better quality, obviously. Really I'm just getting ideas!

Well for not much more there is the 70-200 F4L ...

Yeah, the 70-200mm is a good buy.

Accordingly to you nick Les Paul Telcaster I would recommend the pick-ups.
However photography is easier to share :-)
You should know what is the main topic for you and which lenses you need or want. Wider for sport, street and gigs or tele... for sport and sneaking? :-)

Canon make the EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L USM
It's an L series lens, excellent image quality, very quick to focus and very quiet focussing motor. You can get it from Kea Photo e-bay for around €541.00

    :)

sweet! vs say, a sigma 70-300mm? Wipes the floor right? I WOULD like a 300mm if I'm honest.

Nope, as in This if you could get one second hand, or through B&H maybe?

I second that. The Canon 70-300 IS USM is a great value lens, with good optics and slick AF. The Sigma is a lot cheaper, but feels more plasticky and has much slower AF. www.warehouseexpress.com in the UK have the Canon in stock for €540.

I have just ordered the 70-300 IS USM from B&H. I flip-flopped for a long time over whether to go for this or the 70-200 F4, which is actually cheaper on B&H. In the end, I wanted the longer zoon and smaller package more than the increase in IQ that the L lens would have brought me...

Sigma feels plasticky? That darn thing is a bloody brick!! Agree with slow AF though. However, it does produce crisp pictures between 100 - 250mm. Thats the only zoom I have at the moment, and saving (for another few years, at this rate) for a 70-200 2.8 L IS. Then a 1.4x tele-converter. Then 300 F2.8 L. Then 28-70 F 2.8 L. Then 10-22 EFS. Then 1D MIII. Then .... :o

I must have too much money and time on my hands. Ok, I don't have the 1.4x converter (I do have the 2x though), and I don't have the 300 F2.8 L, but then again, I do have the 100-400m IS L.

The 1D MkIII would be very nice, but I first need to get better with the 20D I have.

I'm really liking the 70-300 IS. But where to buy? I'm really apprehensive about buying from hong kong sellers returned from a search on eaby.ie.

    hya's,
I'm just wondering if I order the lens you were talking about from the US I'm just wondering if it's going to get "hit" by any import tax etc. I know a few people that got caught with it on books from Amazon.com ?

Just to clarify this is the lens your on about
Canon Zoom Telephoto EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS Image Stabilizer USM Autofocus Lens
    ?

    From their website :
B&H is not responsible for and can offer no specific advice on import fees, duty, Customs or taxes that you may be charged when your merchandise reaches you and urges you to consult your local government import office with any questions.

With the dollar exchange rate (1.3 avg) it's down to 420e, pixmania 606e (quick prices).
I have a friend over there but he wont be coming back for over a month :(

So anyone hit with import tax/vat from the states ?

please be good news, after taking 550 RAW images from my nephews first communion I need something to cheer me up :)

    Thanks
    Muineach

it's absolutely a possibility, but it's 21% which means that you're still quids in if you get caught.

It's 21% of the market value in Ireland, and there's a small handling fee... Have been caught for stuff in the past. Nothing major and wouldn't put me off ordering from the States, but still... If it's an item they can generate an Irish price for, they will!

Surely it's 21% of the stated value of the package. Otherwise Customns would have to maintain a database of the current market price of everything that is sold in the country.

My experience in the past is that the charge is on the package value

Well, maybe common things like computer parts etc. they have a look up table maintained for. That's what I got caught on, and I ended up paying way more than 21% on the package price - worked out about 40% all in. Would make sense to base it on the package value, but since when do the customs guys in this country make sense at all? ;)

For digital cameras it's 21% of the cost and shipping. It is not 21% of the market value. For other camera equipment, eg. lens, you pay duty first then 21% vat.

thanks guys, i found it for 541,78EUR on digitalwonderland
it has a 50e rebate so that puts its around 500e, i think for the sake of 80e it might not be worth it.
Just to clarify, it was the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM that was a good choice ?
Thanks, just don't want to spend the money only to discover I got the wrong one :)
