McAfee Virusscan enterprise v8.0 - Getting updates from the net

We use this here in our offices and all the machines update with push technology from our main "McAfeeprotection pilot" master program (so to speak).

We have a remote user and he needs the virusscan software so he won't be able to receive his updates from our main server. The client seems to be really short of configuration options so I don' t see anywhere to specify "Download from internet"

If I click "update now" it appears to connect to a software repository called NAIhttp and download some xml files and stuff. It actually even appears to be sucessful in updating.

However, if I go to the console it says the update failed. Theres nothing wrong with the network settings at all, no firewall rules blocking it, access to the net is fine.

This is definitely a McAfee problem or perhaps your just can't update this software this way seeing as it's enterprise. If this is the case we will just have to get him a home version of anti-virus.

Would anybody here recommend putting avg free on a business computer by the way. I probably wouldn't do it but i'd be interesting in peoples thoughts on this.

not sure about this, but aren't you not supposed to use AVG free for businesses? Meaning you would have to get the paid version...

AVG is so much better than McAfee that you should replace all the McAfee products with AVG, if you were worried about AVG being adequate enough protection for work PC's that is.

Well I'm not here that long but I think our anti-virus solution is relatively new. We haven't had problems with virus' anyway so there isn't any good reasons to change it from the management perspective. It also isn't bad on system resources so it does'nt cause me any problems either.

I think your right come to think about it regarding avg free for business, I don't think I would have implemented it anyway.

Is avg really that much better than McAfee though?

Yes AVG is better than McAfee in every possible way. McAfee is a resource hog and really wont stop viruses from getting on your PC, and costs quite a bit to have on your PC's.

Whenever McAfee runs out wouldn't hurt to suggest AVG imo

McAffee is also a nightmare to remove from a computer.

You can update the enterprise software by the method you mentioned above, by connecting directly to the internet. You won't need a home version. I know you said your net connection is fine. Can you give any more detail on the errors?
