I am thinking off doing the hdip some time in the next few years - I have a degree in computers - can anyone tell me

    1) Am i resticted to certain subjects ? Like I could teach computers but not sure what else?
    2) Is it the only way into secondary teaching? Not sure I want to take a year off work.
    3) Is it easy to apply?
    4) Is it a good idea to do this course:)

    1) You must have as part of your degree a subject on the current secondary school curriculum and I am not sure if computers qualifies as that.

    2) I think there is a part-time H.Dip in DCU but it appears to be aimed at people who are doing some teaching already and need to regularise their position. You might have great difficulty getting into it if you are not working in a cognate area.

    3) Yes. I have seen the applications forms and they are straightforward. But the average degree mark required is fairly high I believe i.e. you would need a high 2.1 on average to be fairly sure of getting in. There is some restriction on Business Graduates in at least some colleges. I think maybe only 10% of the places are reserved for these.

    4) It's not really a question of if it's a good idea or not I would say. The question is if you want to teach. If you want to teach then it is necessary. If you don't want to teach it is probably pointless. It strikes me as a qualification that is teaching a trade in effect and is not exactly transferable to many other roles and certainly not a requirement for any other jobs.

I briefly flirted with the idea of teaching a year or two ago and that's how I sourced the information.

Go to www.pac.ie and click on "Postgraduate Diploma in Education" and it will give you a lot more.
