Came across this just now on The Register

    View the tech video

    Try the demo

I'm looking forward to catching up with this when it is at a more advanced stage.

Think of the things you could do. Check out some of the views from tourist sites before you get there. If this was linked with google maps and photo from every one was laid on top, then the whole world could be view from any angle.

The demo is very good. You can view shots from multiple angles and see the angle at which the picture was taken.

One of the few things to impress me lately. The future of photo sharing on web is looking good.

    edit:
Forgot we have a photography forum. Wasn't sure where else to put this. Can someone kick it across. Thanks.

    edit2:
    Cheers Ruu

Unfortunately it currently takes far too long to build up the 3d matrix to be a consumer / online service but Moore's law means that this will be coming down very rapidly...

I only watched the vid too and its pretty funky indeed to say the least. Imagine the amount of RAM you need to ensure great smooth operations.

I ran it on a 2GB laptop which is running Vista (so you can immediately deduct one of those GB). The 3d card isnt up to scratch on this thing but it was perfectly smooth and fast for me.

I can see something like this being free in a year or two. It isn't something that a company can license, they need users to fill it with information. Microsoft have alrady bought it (or in to it). It will be a mass market tool.

damn. it is tought to fix spelling mistakes while drunk

From the same research groups there is also HDView for viewing Gigapixel image files - and they are starting to bring these three technologies together....maybe we could put together a gigapixel image of Dublin between the lot of us?

    On a 48" touch screen.

    Now THAT would impress.

pretty impressive - even if it is just the demo so it should be!

And looks like a pile of useful techniques will spill over into all sorts of photographic tools.
