I have noticed a major difference in the effort put into the leaving cert when i did it and this year

I remember when i did mine(2004) NO ONE seemed to study at all-The liabrary would be empty and after an exam everyone would head off to the cinema or bowling etc

Came out of the gym about an hour ago- and there was about 20 kids sitting outside the liabrary studying- And i looked into the liabrary and the place was choc a block in there

And the exams were over for the day and they were still studying for the one the next day

Must say its a welcome change :D

Weird thread....you see people studying, ergo there's a major difference in motivation from 3 years ago? That's bad science.

When I did mine nearly 10 years ago people studied like mad, the days wre as sunny and glorious as now and we sat in the courtyard of the convent, eyes glued to the books eating sparkles ice lollys. i noticed over the years when i was teaching that people seemed o have a more relaxed attitude to study in recent years (they still worked hard all the same).

They have to. There's only a certain quota of A1's,A2's etc. they can give out so even if your paper sucked, as long as everyone elses in the country was **** as well you could get a good grade

    Wrong.

The LC isn't marked to a curve, however, the law of averages states that results will reflect a bell curve every year. Each corrector initially corrects about 20 or so scripts out of around 200 and sends the results to the Dept. If the results are on average too high or low the marking scheme is adjusted to be tougher or easier and the scripts are marked again. When the results reflect a bell curve there is an extremely high probability that students have been properly assessed, which is why the department keeps on changing marking schemes until the results reflect such a curve.

And there can't ever(well it's HIGHLY improbable to the point of dismissing the notion as impossible) be a year that is "really good" or "really bad". There will be sight deviations obviously, but again, law of averages, intelligence levels don't deviate much from year to year.

It is, with a certain amount of limits.

There is no law of averages.

Exactly, if the marks are too high they adjust the marking scheme to adjust the average grade.

[QQUOTE]which is why the department keeps on changing marking schemes until the results reflect such a curve.[/QUOTE]So they do mark to a curve..

Not as such. Not the way some students seem to describe it. Marking to a curve like they do in America would involve rounding people up or down to reflect the curve, which doesn't happen.

Basically, no year is massively different to the last, you can't get "screwed over" by the way the papers are marked.(Like some students would seem to assume)
