Started a nice debate in the pub the other night , let's see what happen's here.

How much would it take for you to do FIFTEEN Years in PRISON for someone else

    €100,000, €250,000 ,€500,000 €1 MILLION , €2MILLION , €5 MILLION + or NO PRICE WOULD EVER EVEN TEMPED ME

Now before you start replying in mass about no-way , never etc
    My opinion was
99% of us are going to work for the next thirty to forty years and if you're luck you may have a comfortable retirement ,this way will give you a bright future , in quicker time and without the misery of the day to day grind.......
This way of thinking may or may-not change your opinion or may just make you think a bit longer before answering NEVER anyway

Never. I think it's relatively safe to use the showers at work.

I'd do a year for 2 to 5 million, but not a chance id do 15, for any amount.

Fifteen seems a bit too long for my liking. But a couple of years I would definately do for a few million. Brilliant idea for a thread op.

Yeah like others have said, not a chance doing 15 years.

I'd do one year... for 10 million.

Life's to precious man - no guarantee you'll be alive in five years, nevermind 15. Plus tot up the amount of (female/consensual) sex you're going to miss out on - 5,000+ nights. B0ll0x to that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,432 ✭✭✭Steve_o

No way would I.....actually if i got 5 mil per year, i'd consider doin 5 years, but 15....no way!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,990 ✭✭✭Cool_CM

F#ck that! Firstly its 15 years of your life which no amount of money can buy back, you'll be missing out on friends, family etc(which maybe you could buy back later but it's not the same), then you'e got yourself a criminal record, on top of that unless you resort to other measures you're inflicting a 15 year vow of chastity on yourself!
Now if it was a million per year on offer it might be different answer

I'm sure you'll make up for it with the amount of ass raping's you'll receive inside.

    5475 nights X 3 big guys = getting raped 16425 times

Not worth any money under the sun in my book.

You're not just asking someone to trade one career for another

You've to give up friends and family AND the opportunity to meet someone, raise my own family, sex etc etc Plus you'd be a completely changed person when you came out.

The answer to the question is a simple economics one. For those currently serving time, what was the probable outcome of the crime for the given probablity of getting caught time probable jail time.
Use that as a base for calculating individual utility finctions.

Lose 15 years of my life in a terrible place for money? No way! Money isn't everything, and those 15 years might be the best and only years of my life!

If i was given the 2-5M the day i went in and the money was deposited into a high interest swiss bank account. 15 years of interest is gonna mean 50-100% more ;)

    Not for any money.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,503 ✭✭✭thefinalstage

I would do 15 years in prison if I was given 3.5 million pounds Sterling worth of government guaranteed bonds. Sterling is a real currency. I would also expect to be be paid in parts such as say 50k a month or in one lump sum.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,264 ✭✭✭✭jester77

Not a chance, that's way too many pick up the bar of soap days!

prison year is 9 months average in Ireland
    so 15 by 9 months = 135 months = 11 years 3 months
which is €5 Million = €37,037 per month
Would that make a different to anybody.
Also for the people saying prison rape etc a bit to much TV me thinks...
and more interesting in my opinion is no one is asking about the type crime we would be going in for... hmm

You'd want to be payed while in you're in there and for an equal amount of recovery time when you get out so.
    30 yrs @ €100000/yr = €3000000.

I'd also index link that if I knew how(anyone?), reckon the final figure would be around 5mil maybe more. I wouldn't do it though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,186 ✭✭✭✭Sangre

I think anyone who seriously considers this needs to re-evaluate their life.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,925 ✭✭✭aidan24326

Maybe it would have been more interesting if the timeframe wasn't so drastic? 15 years is a long time, no amount of money can compensate for that.

But what if the figure was 5 years? 3 years? Hypothetically if it was 3 years with the promise of a good few million when I got out, I'd maybe consider it. Any longer than that and I don't think so.

Reduce the time to 12 months and I bet lots of people would seriously consider it, if there was a couple of mill involved.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,977 ✭✭✭GhostInTheRuins

Of couse you have to consider what the crime is. That could totally effect the way you're treated. The type of prison conditions too, low-high security ect. If I was treated like the guys in Goodfellas while they were in prison I might consider a couple years :D

I depends whom Id be serving the 15 years for. Some randomer? No thanks. Someone I care about and think couldnt handle it? Yes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,467 ✭✭✭smemon

15 years is a long time.

this isn't big brother here, it's prison. 15 years locked in a room with no entertainment? No thanks ;)

    no money is worth that.

    Agreed.

    I'd never do it!

I think it depends on your circumstances... for instance a bum on the street with no prospects or family might relish the idea of 15 years of free food and place to live with the prospect of a few million when he gets out for a nice retirement.

    me though... no chance.

Im not voting on the grounds of no "atari Jaguar" option or at the least no option for it to be other than 15 years.

Life isn't just aout making money, maybe you should enter the lotto though.
What would I say to friends/gf/family?
I would miss fifteen years of fun and my life.

i would need in and around 60 million to do everything i want at once, ill do anything to get that money, well not anything

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,977 ✭✭✭GhostInTheRuins

You have to take into consideration as well that in 15 years a few million wont be worth anywhere near as much as it does today.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 60,110 Mod ✭✭✭✭Tar.Aldarion

In fifteen years it will still be a lot... Plus, you would have killer interest. :)

Yes but in 15 years your pension may not be worth alot...

OP, what did you do, when are they sendin you down, will that be cash up front?

As i stated in my reply I'm very surprised that a lot of poster are not asking about the type of crime, white collar, violent ETC

Also for who you are doing the time would be a key factor, I would safety say that if the OP question was would you do 15 years (no cash ) for son /daughter ,wife/ girlfriend etc.. just because you are 100% sure it would Kill them , we would have a lot more poster answering YES

Ps how do you muti-quote in replies

You could always go to mountjoy... Might even be allowed a pet to go along with the widescreen tv...
    Sterling is a real currency.

This post annoyed me, why do you say that sterling is real money? you make it out that the euro isn't... well it's not monopoly money (although it does look like it...)

Also, which one of ye said that ye'd do it for €100,000 - €500,000??? Desperate times?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 291 ✭✭imeatingchips

    Sterling is a real currency.

Give me any of that old crappy euro stuff you have lying around. Sure it's worth nothing anyway. you're right, it's not a real currency at all!

I'll give you a mirror (WOWWW) and maybe some SUGAR for it?

Interesting question, know someone who's done it, not sure of figuresinvolved though.

As for myself not for fifteen years, would do a year or two for a hundred grand though
