Ray Darcy Today FM Show What song caused upset this morning?

Driving to work this morning and flicked to Ray Darcy's show. Seems a song was played on the airways that caused upset to a listener.

(only 1/2 heard the programme but I am dying to know what song caused upset?)

They had to bring on the programmes producer on to to clarify if the song should be played or not.

I hate it when I only have 1/2 information.

    Anyone know what happened?

    Thanks ;)

    regina spector - hotel song
it contains lyrics mentioning bags of cocaine and someone went on a rant about it blah blah blah. ray darcy sat perfectly balanced on the fence as usual. that show irritates me so much.

    OH NOES YOU SAID COCAINE!

Sweet Jesus. People will actually complain about anything these days. I would have told the complainer to **** off and chill out.

    Thanks Ray.

Now that I've heard about this apparent narcotic called "cocaine" I'm sure to spend quite a lot of my money booking hotel rooms looking out for small bags of the stuff. Considering the costs of hotel rooms this may put my marriage at risk.

Also, i note lots of ads for foods that can cause me to out on weight are broadcast during the show. This may have a terrible affect on my lifestyle, and if there is further proof needed of the awful attitude of the show and its irresponsibility he also made reference to a "David Bowie" who, i am led to understand, also was fond of this "cocaine" stuff. Well, as this Mr Bowie is a star I'm just going to take up a habit like his, blow all my money and it'll be Ray Darcy's fault. Not mine.

Some people are unlucky enough to work somewhere that has radio on all day and it's tuned it to some station you despise. :(

I work in a similar plac, difference is you can change the station and people don't mind. :)

    So the song says:
    "A little bag of cocaine"

That line is repeated 4 times in all. Spektor also mentions cigarettes, which is an illegal substance for under 18s. Shame on you, Darcy. Shame on you, Spektor.

No more mentioning things that are in any way illegal. Ever. Even if it's just to comment on how bad they are for you.

Jesus christ, the line doesn't begin it with "I snorted..." and end it with "and it was the greatest thing ever", so how is this even an issue?

And I bet this same moron who rang in has no problem with 50 Cent's 'Candy Shop', Black Eyed Pea's 'My Humps', Pussycat Dolls' 'Beep', Sugarbabes' 'Push the Button', Christina Aguelaria's 'Durrty' etc. etc. despite them being more explicit than a softcore porno (I'm referring to the radio edits too). It's ok though, because they don't actually say 'sex', they just make overt implications towards it and kids are too stupid to get that. Right?

Could be worse, though.....one of the guys in our office actually switched over to Gerry Ryan recently.....as soon as he did there was WAR, and we ended up listening to CDs for a few hours as a compromise.

Ray's show HAS become a bit stale, but it's still the best on offer - unless you're in the mood for some relatively serious local info or discussion, in which case you tune into [insert city name here] Today......bottom line is, though, there's no real competition for Ray if you don't want to listen to talk about what's going on in your area.

Re this song - flogen's spot on; there are 7-year-olds going around singing repetitive choruses of soft-porn lyrics; this song MENTIONS cocaine and there's a complaint! What next ?

Ban ten-year-olds from Irish singalong bars in case they hear the word "gun" in the lyrics of some archaic rebel song (and not, ironically, because parents shouldn't bring their children into pubs and First Communions are not an excuse to go on the beer for the day to get pissed  ) ?

There are a LOT worse songs than this there (in more ways than one) and I gave up doing the occasional kids' disco/party because I didn't agree with playing some of the songs that they like.....but complaining about playing a song - that mentions cocaine - to adults is not an issue......

Did the caller even listen to the context in which it is mentioned ? Is the song pro-cocaine use or against it ? Or did they just complain because they heard the word ?

I'd also like to see the following banned from radio

    a) Lola by the Kinks (cross dressing Transexuals - WON'T SOMEBODY THINK OF THE CHILDREN)

    b) Brown Sugar - Rolling Stones - Slavery, Drugs, Casual Racism, Sado-masochism, possible under-age sex

    c) Fat Bottomed Girls - Queen - it'll encourage girls to eat more cake. Probably

    Anybody got any more?

Well obviously Cocaine by Eric Clapton must be banned immediately so as not to corrupt the children!

That was pretty much the unanimous consensus of everyone that texted in after he read out your ones e-mail.

There was a DJ/show on 2fm, around five o clock, which played the song with the cocaine lines in it.

But the "think of the children brigade" were assured by the DJ, that this is the first/only time they will play it unedited. Any other time it's played, (because it had become a popular request ) the coke part will be removed.

    No joke.

Relax must not be heard by the little 'uns.

Walk on the Wild Side obviously. Not to mention Perfect Day and Golden Brown.

    Mike.

I heard that the song Golden Brown was banned from Today FM, due to its subject matter. Mentioned on wikipedia, so it has to be true :p
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Brown
I have it played on it though, and its a strange choice of song to substitute it with, an other druggy song(skin deep).

Here, here. Well fckn said. Stupid ignorant complainers out there who have nothing better than to complain & about the most stupid little things!

whatever about making a big deal about refering to a substance which is fairly common in ireland, that darcy bloke does my head in with his self-righteous, reactionary, rant. i can barely tolerate his boring droning humourless voice for more than a few minutes.
he reminds me of a geekey, psuedo political, student union type who imposes his bullsh!t world views on everyone around him. i wouldn't p1ss on him if he was on fire.

Now if it was Bobbing For Apples I might have understood (co-incidentally I was listening to that as I came across this thread).

Its depressing listening to the sort of people ringing into radio stations complaining, but its a tribute to radio that they will listen to and dignify criticism. Compare that with the way some TV companies conduct themselves (eg Endemol & Big Donor).

One thing that especially boiled my blood was a few months ago Joe Duffy was taking calls on some "contraversial" Hunky Dory crisps ad campaign (the details of which were so uncontraversial unremarkable I honestly can't remember).

Some aul' one rang in and complained. Joe, in a rare, shocking, awesome tribute to how a presenter should conduct himself actually asked her if she'd seen the ad. She hadn't.

But infuriatingly he seemed to decide the opinion of someone without any reason to complain was important enough to broadcast on the airwaves. I'd have hung up on her that second and pretended that the station "lost the line, we'll try and get her back on, *honest*" myself.

If it weren't for Phantom FM I don't know what I'd do.

I heard the whole 'episode' that morning. Ridiculous, to be honest.

It was sparked off by a woman who emailed in a (well written, tbh) letter regarding that song, and obviously pushed Ray's buttons. I don't think he has played that song since.

Absolute complete and total overreaction (especially considering the other songs mentioned in this thread)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 122 ✭✭Half-Bicycle

There are people out there who get a strange, quivering almost orgasmic thrill when they hear something "controversial" on the airwaves... so not realising they actually enjoy a bit of spice amongst the bland AOR, they feel compelled to jam the switchboards to save the nations' morals. Or something like that.

We need more people ringing up and complaining about all the "safe" crap that passes for music on the wireless these days.

    Sez I.

"Which would you kick out of bed for eating Hunky Dory" - three women in bikinis in a bed, eating crisps. One of them looked like a tranny.
