Myself and the boss are looking to spend 2 months in South America in December and January. We'll be arriving there from Sydney most likely.
Not really sure where to go, although we *think* we would like to go to Peru for Machu Piccu of course, some steaks and wine in Argentina, probably Buenos Aires, the salt flats in Chile and thats really about all we know at the moment, so we've no idea how to join the dots :)

Cost isn't really such a huge issue, as we're only away for 2.5 months, so we're looking at around Eur4000 each including flights via Sydney (a week in Australia at a wedding and possibly a couple days in Tokyo on the way there)

We had Bolivia in there as a route possibility, we thought it might be a bit like Laos - cheap to be there, lovely people, rewarding travelling. However given the slow travelling conditions there we are wondering if we will spend a lot of time travelling through it, and given the duration of our trip, if it is going to be time well spent. And truth be told we've heard of some horror stories of bus journeys lasting days, washed out roads and sleeping drivers, which don't really inspire loads of confidence.

Any suggestions you have for travelling in South America would be well appreciated. We're not new to travelling, we spent all of 2006 in SEAsia & China (7 months) and Oz,Nz & Fiji (4.5 months).
    Thanks
    K

    KenMc,

Just wondering if you have got anywhere with this? I'm looking to go to S. America for a similar length of time. It's such a massive place I'm finding it hard to decide what is achievable in a month or two as I'd like to see a lot but at the same time I want it to be holiday too!

If anyone else has done similar trips I'd love to hear about them.

    Cheers!

I have spent some time in Argentina and would highly recommend it. You couold spend the two months alone there. We flew into BA, headed up to Igazu (large waterfall & national parks) which is on the border with Brazi. Its a beautiful spot. The nmoved onto Cordoba and then Mendoza, which is on the border with Chile, lots to do around here if your into out door activity. Its on the foot of the andes and the scenery is spectacular. You should try and take in a soccer game involving Boca or River Plate. I'm not a huge soccer fan but the atmosphere at these games is unreal, singing and dancing for the entire game. There is loads to do in BA, plenty to see and do. The accommodation, food & wine are excellent throughout argentina and relatively inexpensive. I haven't been to Machu Piccu but have frinds who were there and in Rio. Machu Piccu is well worth the visit from what they tell me. They enjoyed Rio but didn't feel particularly safe there. The carnival is on there in early january so if your going book accommodation early.

Anyway I'm sure ye'll have a blast, enjoy
