    http://www.rte.ie/news/2007/0611/louth.html

I've been back in the country for a month and a half now, and this is already the second story I've seen of this nature (the first being the Estonian guy who was killed up near the airport) and presumably there have been more less serious cases (i.e. that haven't resulted in death or serious injury)

What is the point of it all? Why attack and murder people, just so you can steal their car, drive it for a bit, and then set it on fire? I mean, if they want a joyride that much, why not just use their own cars?

I don't know any kind of statistics, but this country must be up there for completely random, unmotivated attacks. How many stories do we see in the news or hear on here of people just being randomly stabbed, punched, beaten up, etc.?

The thread on drinking while pregnant reminded me of a documentary I saw on how fetal alcohol syndrome can affect the part of the brain that controls consequence and guilt, in that people who have this disease have absolutley no guilt, remorse or fear of consequences. With the drinking culture here, I wouldn't be shocked to find out that that's the reason for all these scumbags we have here.

Sorry, I just need to rant about this, because as I said, I've been away for a few years, and everytime I start liking this place again, I'm reminded of how much of a ****ed up place it can be too.

Scumbags. Hope the ***** that did this are locked up for a long time, but I doubt that will happen.

Yeah, I heard about this today. ****ing disgrace is all that I can say about it. Pure scumbags through and through. What type of people would do something like that, attacking an elderly couple with hatchets and burning out their camper van that the probably paid about 20k+ for?.

In all fairness though, blaming it on fetal alcohol syndrome is a bit over the top and just creating an excuse for scumbags like them.

I'm not exactly blaming it on that. I'm just genuinely wondering why these people do what they do.

Simple answer - they're scum and there is no deterrent. They'll probably get a couple of suspended sentences. If they're from a ****hole area they'll use the old "disadvantaged, underprivileged background" line or if they're from a well-off background "it was completely out of character and the defendant has good prospects". Or how about "there was drink taken"? I'm sure most of us have been rat-arsed drunk or on some other mind-bending substance without feeling the need to take a hatchet to the head of some elderly tourists.

There is no justice in this country and dirtbags like this see that and know that there is a minimal chance of being caught and an ever lesser one of being properly punished.

That's one of the most stupid things I've ever read. Why would they want to joyride their owns cars? Do you have any idea of what it would be like to be a scumbag? If you wanted to drive a car into the ground and set it on fire would you choose your own?

I suppose thats a simple answer. Like most simple answers its also fairly stupid. Everyone has reasons for why they behave the way they do, and attitudes like the above are very counter productive.

I am repping you ++ in my head right now...

We need to enforce crimes harder, the Gardai just seem to friendly. Bring in some of the old school punishments too, if you steel something you loose your hand. They have that in the middle east where I visited, they also had zero crime there too....

There is plenty of justice in this country, sure aren't the jails full, criminals are usually caught and sentenced, hence the saying crime doesn't pay

So you never hear of rapists, thugs, etc. walking free from court every day of the week?

The jails are full of junkies who nobody gives a **** about anyway. Not saying they shouldn't be there just because they are junkies but I would find beating he crap out of someone or abusing kids is a buit more serious than burglary or shoplifting.

no, haven't heard of any thugs or rapists walking free lately, unless you mean found not guilty in which case they aren't rapists or thugs

Well there was that dude who got a three year suspended sentance for rape and then flicked a cigarette butt at his victim after they left court. But it wasn't his fault, he was off his face on booze and E. Poor lad. At least now his sentance has been applied and he will go to prison. The guy looks like a retard, maybe that's why the moron judge was letting him off.

As for thugs, some of said thugs smashed the mirror off my car and a number of other cars in Howth a while ago. The judge let them off when they said they would pay for the damage. Did they pay for the damage? Not a chance. The scum should be put in jail until they pay.

ah you do that and people will start about human rights blah blah

I'll have a stab in the dark here and say that if they're robbing cars then they probably don't have their shít together to the point where they own their own cars.

RE: the rest of it, I think people are largely a product of their environment and social norms... useless parents, the wrong friends and you're well on your way.

Personally I think there should be a three strike rule where you get sent off to a remote, undeveloped island with all the other fúck-ups to form your own little society... let all the residents of Fúck-up Island constantly fúck each other over and see how they get on.
Maybe then they'll learn to appreciate and respect the restraint with which the rest of us live.

Moosejam, the thing is, whilst Prison would be a living hell to yourself or myself and most other fine upsatnding folk, it's not to the people who's buddies are all in there, and who don't find it THAT big a deal - these tend to be the people who are commiting all these crimes (scummers)

I think they had something like that once...... oh yeah, it's called Australia :D
