Hard drive / partitioning oddity.

    Hi,

Bought another hard drive recently as I was running out of space. Slaved it in the machine, and for the sake of tidiness was hoping to make one large partition of it.

Thing is, the first 512kb of it won't allow me to touch it, except to partition it in either FAT32, or linux ext format. Anyone know why? I've left it unformatted as I'm not wasting a drive letter on it. Oh, and there's this folder on the main partition of the drive. Again - tidiness; what's that? Was thinking of booting in safe mode and deleting, but wondering if there'd be any ill effects afterwards.

(yes have googled this, and searched the boards here; still at a loss)

Not being smart ... but is it possible the hard drive was used in another machine ? 512 Kb seems to be a very small partition, and the funny folder name looks like what you get when you try to undo a format. It would be unusual, but not unheard of for a boxed drive to be RMA'd and not scrubbed properly.

My 2c ? Scrub all the partitions and start from scratch. I wouldn't trust critical data to that drive until you are sure this isnt a 'feature' of the drive :)

Thanks for the reply, I had actually forgotten I'd asked this.

I don't think so - bought it new in some shop - probably pc world or somewhere.

That's just it - I can't actually do anything about that first part. I've left it as unused space, but that I know it's there, and I don't know why is annoying. Well, I'd forgotten about it until I came across this thread again. Now it's going to annoy me again :)

It looks to be at the very start of the drive, so I figured it was some manufacturer thing, perhaps the boot sector of the drive and thus not for users to feck about with, I don't know.

strange for a new drive. Would agree with whats said above and just delete the partition and folder... or you could just leave them (since its not that much space)

its possible the manufacture made some sort of partition with utility tools on it or a boot loader, to help you set up the drive.

Does that folder, not contain some sort of log from windows?

    I have it too.
