Don't know how it works for you but generally this is how it works around my patch(not for coillte land though) To hunt deer you need a license to get license do the following

    1. go and look for deer

    2. find out who owns the land the deer are on

    3. Talk to landowner and ask are they having any trouble with the deer or would they mind if you hunted them

    4. Fill out relevant paper work and send it off

    5. You might get the license or you might be denied and I'm sure they give a reason for the denial.

    6. If you get the license, go hunt. Should cost you nothing for the permission

Great source of information on deer hunting in Ireland...

    http://www.coillte.ie/recreation/licenced_recreational_hunting/

and here is a PDF file on the code of practice for deer hunting ..

    http://www.coillte.ie/fileadmin/user_upload/pdfs/MOF_Code_of_practice_Deer_Stalking_01.pdf

    NOTE:

    Training Requirements

Coillte is moving to a position whereby, only persons that have obtained appropriate certified training qualifications ,
will be permitted to exercise licensed hunting rights on their forest estate.

Although this is not currently a mandatory requirement for game hunting, cognisance will be taken of any such training during the tender evaluation process.

Gottalove the contradiction in the code of practise. No handguns permitted for humane dispatch, but have a trained dog to assist in humane dispatch. [Now,is the dog supposed to dispatch the deer as well as find it???].Good idea and necessary having the dog,but does anyone actually have a breed specifically trained for tracking? There is now a spray out that you can use that shows up the most microscopic drop of blood in an area.Even when wet.Real CSI stuff:D costs about 25euros and makes a litre of a spray.Cheaper than a dwag.

It called Blood re-agent one of the popular brands is:

Thats well cool stuff though you can buy it in different strengths
rangeing from hard to see way up to more or less glowing blue in
    daylight.

You can also buy lamps/lights with blue and red LED's that
are supposed to highlight blood but I dont know if these
    are good or not.

Jagd Terrier.... German hunting terrier. Never seen one around here in Ireland.
Yes a good all rounder, we use them over. Not a paticullary friendly critter when hunting trained. Inbuilt kamakazie tendency like most terriers to tackle things much greater than itself with no fear.Like wild boar!
Wouldnt rate them as the best scent dogs. They will do it,but you wont follow them on a long lead.Let them run and find the animal, they will kick up enough racket when they find it,for you to find them. Some where there is a lot of deer hunting keep a Hanovarian Blood hound[direct trans] or one of the hound type dogs for tracking.
