Good alternative (possibly underground) bands.

DAMN, big typo in the title!

So I'm hoping that this thread will kind of carry on from the 'Alternative ain't what it used to be' thread where we were talking about how most music of late is mundane, boring and generic. A few words were spoken about the music industry and imho it'd be better for music if it'd collapse as making music would be open to anyone with talent as opposed to any means to make money for Sony.

So there's got to be some good music, some good bands/artists out now who deserve recognition and recommendation, be they mainstream, underground, famous or just starting off, as long as they are innovative, talented, or just simply *good*.

So would people please name a modern band who they're into at the moment who they think matches the above description or is of note at all and possibly give a brief description of them too. We gots to show that todays music has some merit!

Personally no-one comes to mind except Kristin Hersh as most of the music I listen to is from a while back. She's got a great husky voice and a lot of passion in her music, download 'head over heels' for a start.

    Failure

One of the most criminally underrated bands of the 90's

    Autolux

Great indie rock band, and the drummer is pure sex on legs

    Grizzly Bear

My new favourite band EVAR. Some of thier songs are just beautiful

    EDIT
well just noticed failure anret modern, but the other 2 are so there ya go!

If you start telling everyone about underground bands, then they won't be underground any more!

Something wrong with that happening? A lot of the point of this thread was to see if/show that bands can acquire recognition due to talent as opposed to media publicity, even though this is publicity to some extent.

DAMN, big typo in the title!

    Fixed.

Now go listen to Larsen, Italian post-rock band. Fabulous.

    Indeed Larsen are very good.
I could go on a big rant about all the bands I like but I wont.

Even though the purpose of this thread is to do so?

Miracle Bell, playing the new band stage at a certain unmentionable festival.

    Well worth a look

Good call, OP. I adore Kristin Hersh.

I tend to look to the past. Nothing wrong with current stuff - I'm just a bit of an 80s/early 90s junkie.

Listen to some Snow Patrol, theyre class :D

But seriously you dont have to go too underground to get some good alternative music, I've been listening to The Walls a lot again lately, HiLo just really tickles me in the right places :)

Just saw this now, tried to start a similar thread in Music earlier on.

I really recommend Beirut to any people who haven't been listening to him yet. Think a singer/songwriter leading a ten piece band playing balkan-folk tinged melodies. Great gig at tripod a few weeks back.

There's plenty of good stuff around, as always, if you go and look.

    For example, just taking whats coming out of Japan at the moment you've got bands like;

    OOIOO
    http://youtube.com/watch?v=D9l_2MDdtKU

    Boris
    http://youtube.com/watch?v=ZskkewUSmZI

    Afrirampo
    http://youtube.com/watch?v=sPX33Paq-KM

    Mong Hang
    http://www.myspace.com/monghangrules

Not to mention mainstays like Boredoms, Acid Mother's Temple and Melt Bannana, all still producing some damn good stuff.

That's just an example, there's interesting/good stuff coming from all over the place. Keep your ears open is all I can say.
