Storing digital photos

    Hi,

I'm looking for the best way to store digital photos while I'm away. I won't have my laptop with me, so I would have to store them on either a memory card, a USB key, or maybe CDs/DVDs. There wil probably be about 600/700 of them. What do you think would be the cheapest storage method, and how much space should they take up? I have a 128mb USB key, but not sure how make that would hold. I've heard that there are ways to change the format (?) of the photos or do something to them anyway, so that they take up less storage space. I'm not very computer literate I'm afraid :o

Thanks for any help y'all can offer.

Ps. Mods, I hope I am posting this in the right place...

First question would be that if you did not have your laptop with you, you would have difficulty transfering the photo's to the USB key. Also the key is too small.

Would you consider investing in some extra memory cards for the camera. Might be the simplest way.

    Hi Shane,

Yeah I thought of that afterwards actually... I was thinking of going to an internet cafe, but I suppose they wouldn't have the software installed for transferring the photos. How big a memory card would I need and how much should it cost though? Thanks!

The Internet Cafe may well work, but you are taking a risk that :

a: There is one near you
b: That it will allow you plug in a USB cable to you camera

That said, if there was one available it would be handy to have them transferred onto CD.

    Something like this.
(You need to how ever buy a seperate 2.5" IDE hard drive to put into it though)

What this does it allows to have an externel harddrive that can copy the entire contents of a digital camera onto it.

(hook camer to box, press copy button)

It is powered by either USB or a battery pack.

I think a couple of large USB flash memory sticks would be a better idea though as they would be more robust, but you would need access to a pc to transfer them over.

If you go for a USB memory stick get a large one. At least 4-8 gigs to be safe.
