Well here is the arcade Bubble Bobble game from within Mame. Let us get some score!

    * Starts now and ends on Sunday 15th July (if you are not tired of it by then)
    * The aim of the game is to score as many points as possible.
    * Post screenshots (not too big, suggest 320x200) in this thread. (ie example below)
    * At the end, we'll tot up a score table. Excel, html or other...
    * Don't cheat - what's the point anyway! - We know where you live!!! :)
    Current Standings:

    round1_highscore.jpg

    Bubble Bobble (c) 08/1986 Taito.
One or two players take on the role of Bub and Bob, two cute dinosaurs who must battle through 100 platform-packed levels and rescue their girlfriends. Bub and Bob are armed only with the ability to make bubbles, in which the game's many enemies can be trapped and killed. The bubbles can also be used as temporary platforms, to help the dinosaurs reach previously inaccessible areas of a level.

    - SCORING -
    Bursting a bubble : 10 points.
    Killing one monster : 1, 000 points.
Killing two monsters at once : 2, 000 points.
Killing three monsters at once : 4, 000 points.
Points double for each extra monster killed at any one time.
    Normal Fruit : 700 points.
    Bonus Score Items (popcorn, burger etc) : 500 - 4, 000 points.

    The guest list:
'Zen-Chan' (first appears in round 1)
'Mighta' (first appears in round 6)
'Monsta' (first appears in round 10)
'PulPul' (first appears in round 20)
'Banebou' (first appears in round 30)
'Hidegonsu' (first appears in round 40)
'Drunk' (first appears in round 50)
'Invader' (first appears in round 60)

Try any version of Mame. I just installed Mame32 0.115u4 (bublbobl). :)

My first attempt - 227,400 pts on level 14. My excuse, i) it's been awhile, ii) it's late iii) it's for fun.

    20070610_bubbob2.png

My background with Bubble Bobble was the C64. Played it a bit as single player. Played a lot in 2 player games. Played a bit on the Amiga and haven't touched it since. The arcade version looks fab! :)

Now here's a challenge :p Myself and my mate used to be able to clock this game with 1 credit each back in the day. No doubt, I won't get much past Level 14 either but I'll give it a bash.

Game on! I'll have a pic up tomorrow morning. Haven't played this game in ages, grew up with it as we had it on the NES but when you play the arcade version it's completely different!

The arcade version allows you to start with long bubbles and sneakers, allowed ?

    :D

I still know the code :(

    Hi Hygro,

You can hit print screen key when you are viewing a score you are happy with. I use infranview myself (thanks for reminding me - it just hit version 4.00). Save and post it here or you could put it up on a photo site and put the image link here.

Another day another go... there is definitely a lot more going on in the Arcade version. A lot of features (ie goodies) were left out on the c64 version I used.

    519,130 points, round 18

I have a lot of improving to do. :o

Hellva score TinCool. I couldn't manage more than 360K tonight. Just got no where tonight after 1 hour. My best game today went to level 15 and lost the lives from level 11 onwards... I had the runners, long range and rapid firing bubbles at that stage. It looked oh so promising. :o

    Bubble bobble death diaries:
    1 lv 11
    2 lv 12
    1 lv 13
    2 lv 14
    1 lv 15

Oh finally.. some bowl movement on the score front :p

Actually I think it was down to a red bubble than gave bub fireball breath lasting for over 3 rounds and 10,000 upon collection to boot. Never remember getting that before.

    742,820 pts to Round 24.
    20070614_bubbleBobble.png

Laptop keys aren't the best for this. :o

Anyone know if Bubble bobble in Mame supports saving high scores? I thought that existed before. But is not working now?
edit... ok, I have verified the hiscore.dat file is in the root of my mame32 (0.116) directory. Checked that I got the latest (18th mar 2007). Anyone got their own one working?

Another go - played conservative this time - tried to not go all out for killing the monsters all at once and got lucky with powerups.

    849,050 pts round 30.

I'll keep dying early after rounds 11 onwards - and all stoopid mistakes. :p It's pretty easy when I have the sneakers and bubble powerups - pity you lose the lot with 1 weeny weeny mistake.
Only noticed lately that mame nolonger saves the hiscores upon exit even with the latest hiscore.dat. Used to work for me with v0.90. No luck with u0.115 or 0.116 though. Depending on savestates now for keeping the highscore table intact. :(

Can't find a rom of this that works, really annoying because it used to work until I got the latest mame. Tried some older versions of mame and it still won't work. Might just have to play it on the saturn.

Finally got this going and achieved this pitiful score:

    bubble.jpg

I think we should have a game of the week like they do in the film forum but have a high score challenge with the winner.

Yeah. That sounds good. A month is a bit long for one game. I love Bubble Bobble but I think after a month interest will wane.

Maybe a game every two weeks ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,766 ✭✭✭hamster

Maybe a new mame game every 2-3 weeks? We don't really have enough scorers for a week.

What we could do is have a vote thread going for the next game while the current game is in progress. I'll set that one up now.

Had a nice run of luck this morning. :) I got nearly a million points from a secret room full of diamonds after entering a metal door around level 20.

    20070623_BubbleBobble.jpg

Score 1,728,700 points up to round 35.

Definitely need the runners to avoid trouble. Score is definitely helped by grabbing every vase for those 100K bonuses that you get if you collect all the fruit/clover whatever. The staff icons really help too....

I'm playing with keys - the usb joystick I have does not interpret each move fast enough.

Good show folks! Still 3 more days to go - TinCool is still lead the pack.

If you haven't already vote here for the next round. Rainbows Islands and R-Type are strong contenders...
