Overclocking memory advice

I've established that my OCZ Gold memory 6400 memory is not up to the task of overclocking.
This is because I needed to relax my timings to 6,6,6,18 in order to get my E6600 clocked to up to 3.5GHz
Before relaxing the timings I could only manage 3Ghz at most.

I have a chance to change the memory cos one stick is faulty.
So I want to get some good overclocking capable memory.
I'm looking for comments on the following....

    Crosair TWIN2X 6400 DDR2, 2048MB CL5
    Corsair Dominator TWIN2X6400C4D 2048MB,
    Or for faster RAM...
    Corsair Dominator TWIN2X8500C5D 2048MB

Is there any benifit from using 8500 when overclocking????

    Ray

There will be a benifit as that ram can run at a higher guaranteed speed with tighter timings.

So where I was taking a chance with the OCZ RAM would overclock, the 8500 RAM is made and tested to run at these higher rates.

So in theroy I could go for really cheap 8500 RAM or expensive 6500 RAM, either way it will work out the same overall price I guess.

Have I understood you right ?

    Basicially yes.

    DDR2 Speeds go as follows:

    PC2-5400 (675Mhz), PC2-6000 (750Mhz), PC2-6400 (800Mhz), PC2-7200 (900Mhz), PC2-8000 (1000Mhz), or PC2-8500 (1066Mhz)

So if you buy 8500 ram the memory will fall back to a lower speed untill you start overclocking. And since its rated to run at a higher speed it in theory should allow you a higher overlcock.

the memory will fall back to 266x2=532

the momory will run at 532.
