passport barcode

I heard some guy say on the radio that he wasn't allowed on a flight to the states because there was no barcode on his passport.

I just checked my new updated passport and its got no barcode either, so whats this barcode about??......is it only for the states??...and how do i go about getting one??

There are no barcodes on passports. There is a machine readable piece of code on the bottom of the picture page.

On the photo page there should be a machine readable section that looks like this

P<IRL<SURNAME<<FIRSTNAME<SECONDNAME<<<<<<<<<<

With another line below it containg your passport number and DOB, ect
If you have this your passport is ok for travel to the US

I suspect he either has a replacement passport after it was lost / stolen or he has an out of date one. :rolleyes:
