I'm thinking about getting me a portable system. What would people recommend, the PSP or DS?

    Thanks

Depends on your own preferences. The DS is cheaper and has far more and better games. The PSP has the multimedia functionality and does have some excellent games.

You can get good multimedia functionality on the DS if you get the right flash card. Also if you get a custom firmware on the PSP it opens up a whole host of new homebrew programs.

I just rang up HMV and they said they were both priced at EUR 150.

In gamestop(i think) you get a DSlite and game for 150.
I would recommend a ds,my friends have psp's and they are always complaining about the lack of games.

The browser is slow nasty rubbish but you can watch youtube videos. You have to convert divxs to a format that is playable on the PSP. There might be some homebrew program that will play them however.

The Psp is better for watching videos clips because it has a better screen but the Ds games are much better I think :D

I got a PSP for a pressie a month ago and while I was dubious about it at first, I've really gotten to love it. I'm currently playing through GTA liberty city at the mo and its as good as the GTA games I had on my PS2. My daughter has DS lite and its fun but thats the thing. I see it as a kiddies plaything whereas the PSP is more suited to the older gamer.

You can also load on music, pictures and video to the PSP.

My Ds gets used all the time for games. The PSP however only gets used as an expensive MP3 player and for PS1 emulation and 8-bit emulation.

Agree with everything Prosperous Dave says there.

I have had a Japanese import PSP since launch and I love it. Doesn't get the same level of play it used to since my PS3 arrived, but I wouldn't swap it for a DS. There is no shortage of excellent games for the PSP.

My daughter got a DS and games recently and I haven't been overly impressed with it at all although she loves it.

I had a PSP i used it all the time when travelling but when i stopped travelling it sat on bedside locker gathering dust , the games are just far too expensive and while graphics are good the layout of the psp was made for people with tiny hands , while im no shoveled handed farmer i still got really bad pains in my tumbs from playing anything more than 30 mins .

I was looking recently at a DS but after checking out the price of games and the graphics from the pics on the back i decided against it . But during the week a mate called over with his one and a R4 card that lets you put vids and mp3's on it aswell .

I wanted it for the brain training game , but i see it also has games like sim city theme park and age of empires so to say its purely a kids console isnt quite right but the majority of games are aimed at the kids .

I take it you're talking about the psp browser? Have you used the opera browser for the DS? I was surprised with how good it is.

The DS has an extensive library of games. So extensive that it really can't be considered "just for the kids". I absolutely love mine. Haven't been this impressed with a console in a long time.

    DS

    no competition IMO

i love my psp to bits (it's haxed so i do more with it then sony want me to), but for gaming, i find myself returning to killzone, lumines and wipeout all the time on psp, with very few "new" prospects attracting me. the ds just has a better library overall.

though i would wait on buying either, since at e3 sony will announce a psp re-design, and i wouldn't be surprised if nintendo do the same

I really can't see them redesigning the DS lite. They have it perfect as is. The older "phat" model looks like a joke compared to it.

I have a PSP and my kids have DSs. No comparison really PSP is for adults and the DS is for Kids. Great games on the DS, as well as the PSP. But to have web, photos movies etc, etc its a great item to have when travelling.
I suppose its down to what age you are.

That's garbage, the DS is great for kids, but adults aswell. I have a PSP and a DS Lite. I'll leave it up to people to guess which is in use every day and which is gathering dust in a drawer.

+1 on that quote being garbage.
I myself am 22 and absolutely love my ds. It has such a large selection of games that saying it's 'just for kids' is pure ignorance.

I have a flash card for it which lets me do pretty much everything the psp can do Media wise, including homebrew, viewing pictures/video, playing music files and going online. So there goes that argument too.

I have a DS and im very happy with it. I have a good selection of games. Mario Kart is excellent and you can play online, advance Wars is great as well. I bought Nintendogs when i got it and played it every single day for about 2 months but it got annoying taking 3 dogs for walks and training every day!! I got Resident evil DS but havn't played much of that yet, it seems good. Hotel Dusk and Another Code, 2 good adventure games. New Super Mario Bros was a great game also. I still play the mini games from time to time since i finished it.

Basically theres a good selection of games on it for all ages in fairness. But it doesn't have any good sports games. I havn't played Pro Evo 6 DS but it got bad reviews. I am interested in playing online so i might get it yet.

Id love to get a PSP solely for MGS portable Ops but it seems like such a waste of money for just one game. Id like to get Pro Evo 6 and FM 2007 on the PSP too but i already have those games on other formats so i dunno...

Depends what you want OP, for sports games or racers go for the PSP but don't rule out the DS cos people say its full of kiddies games either. Theres plenty of great games available.

Well i was in gamestop and they had a second hand PSP in good nick so i went for that. I have been well impressed with it so far (have it just over a week now). The browser is actually very good except that you cant watch any videos off the next because it comes with flash player 6 for some reason.

Dont bother with FM2007, i got it and brought it back the next day. Its like the older version from way back when you couldnt watch the 2d match and its all way too fiddley for a little console. Just stick to the PC version imo.

For the first time since I bought them both at their Japanese launches two or three years ago, I've actually been using my DS more than my PSP at the moment. Only because I moved and all my flatmates have them and a lot of multiplayer games get played. None of them as fun as Liberty City Stories on wi-fi used to be, and nobody around here seems to have a PSP... C'est la vie.

Personally I much prefer the PSP overall having owned both for a long time, I find most DS games to be repetitive and I'm sick of Nintendo's constantly rehashed franchises. Enough Mario Kart already! I much prefer F1 06 on PSP, or even the race modes in GTA.

Plus with a lot of original games like Loco Roco, Exit and Mercury to go with the blockbuster PS2 franchises (GTA, MGS, GOW etc). Currently on my most wanted list are Crush (getting it this week) and MGS: Portable Ops. On DS, there's, um, well, nothing. The best games on the DS at the moment can be played equally well with a pen and paper.

But going back to my first point, I'm still playing my DS more now. Buy the one you know people you can play multiplayer with. It's by far the best experience on either machine.

Nintendo DS Lite + R4DS + 2GB Micro SD Card = Possibly best purchase ever...

go for the ds lite, the psp aint good my brother has one and it is just lying about the place but i will use it for my ps3 in the future..

    my 0.43 cent

never had a ds but have had a psp for a long time indeed, some great games, mgs, gta, syphon filter, socom, kept me much entertained.

at the mo im mostly watching family guy on the way to work, don't know about homebrew on the ds but having custom firmware on the psp is pretty genius, all the functions and none of the restrictions.

i've never regretted my psp purchase and it keeps me entertained on the move, though i will say i havent played a game in quite a while i'm using it more as a movie viewer. though i really am looking forward to silent hill origins

but in case you think im saying there's no good games for the psp i'm not, i've played out most of the reallly good games and they've been legend. in fact i've just got sid meires pirates which i hope will entertain me for quite some time.

    in a word, psp: legend

another few words, ds: i don't know

Sayin that the DS is just for kids is absolute rubbish. I know people into their 40s who play their DS and love it. The games on it are brilliant and the R4ds card adds just so much more to it. Games so far that have really impressed me are Elite Beat Agents, Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan!, Nanostray, Mario Kart, Final Fantasy 3, Final Fantasy Revenant Wings, Sonic Rush and Metroid. Im sure the psp is good and it does seem to have some great games but anyone I know who owns one, it has been sitting in the cubard collecting dust.

    Hi,

My kids have the ds lite and I'm about to get one for myself. I love them. I intend getting an R4 card etc but how do I use it? Do I just 'copy' dvds and music onto it?

Also how do I use the homebrew and browser bits please?

I know - I'm showing my age but I still love my gadgets and I want to get the most out of this one.

    Thanks,
    jolo
