M50 Luas works at Carrickmines

Over the last few days, a start has been made on construction of the LUAS alignment over the M50 at Carrickmines.

Excavation work on both sides of the motorway just on the Dundrum side of Carrickmines junction, close to the point where the sliproads reach the level of the main carrigeway.

Metal rods for the first of a number of concrete support posts are in place on the southeast side, easily visible from the special road that leads from Carrickmines junction to the racecourse.

Nearby, a house extension that had been built across the track alignment at the old Glenamuck Road bridge has been demolished in the last week.

This old bridge over the Harcourt Street line will have to be replaced, as this narrow stretch of Glenamuck Road is about to be substantially widened, with wider lanes, verge, footpaths and cycle lanes (tender on eTenders a while ago).

Complete reconstruction of Ballyogan Road is also in progress, this will also become a wide two-lane road, with cycle lanes, verge and footpaths, and from Leopardstown Shopping Centre to close to Carrickmines Roundabout will have LUAS running alongside, with stops at the shops, and just before the junction, at the point where the line turns to cross the motorway.

A question re: the Ballyogan Road works .. at one stage (near the shopping centre) the work they're doing seems to cross from one side of the existing road to the other. Is this in the final plan, or is the road going to be rerouted to avoid a crossing?

I believe the LUAS will only run alongside the road from this point on towards Carrickmines, so there won't be a crossover and the road may be slightly narrower here.

The work being done up to that point is just for the road itself - they held this back until the LUAS had the go-ahead, as they wanted to do the whole thing as one scheme.

I imagine (though I don't know for certain) that the LUAS section will be a bit like Embankment Road on the Red Line, with the LUAS beside the road, but slightly segregated.

Anyone know what the proposed finish date is for the Ballyogan road works is?

It's probably just because the available space is to the south of the road for the western half, and to the north for the eastern.

Wow!!! It certainly is brilliant to see Transport 21 become a reality. :D
