Which decoder and codecs for Vista Media Center?

I just installed Vista on new htpc and so far have only installed the 'ffdshow tryouts' codec pack. Some divx files won't play in Media Center and the live tv is jumpy.

What decoder and codec packs should I install to get the best performance and compatibility? I have a Abit F-190HD mobo and am usingthe onboard graphics with a HDMI cable to the TV.Thanks

You shouldn't really be having any problems with that. The LiveTV uses Microsoft's own MPEG-2 decoder as well.

Was it the beta release of ffdshow tryouts that you installed ?

Also have you installed ATI Catalyst display driver ?

Thanks 8T8 - I didn't knowI needed that ATI driver, but after installing it now the TV playback is no longer jumpy. However, I'm using NTL analogue cable and the picture is shown in 4:3 format in the middle of the screen surrounded by big black lines on either side - it looks pretty poor so is there any way to make it widescreen?

Tuners unfortunately only record in 4:3 when using the AV inputs like composite or s-video from what I understand.

However you can make it wide, press the info button on the remote and select zoom now cycle through the options from 1-4, number 3 is usually the best option to stretch wide.

Thanks 8T8 - I used the Zoom option an its now much better. Quality of the basic cable isn't good but may be as I have a splitter on the cable upstream (which I hope to be able to remove shortly).

I haven't tried DVD playback yet - what do I need for this and will it support DVD upscaling?

Vista comes with a built in DVD decoder no need to buy one.

It automatically upscales to the set desktop resolution. If you have an ATI graphics card it will assist with the upscaling through AVIVO it's DVD processing technology. NVIDIA requires it's own Purevideo DVD decoder for that though which doesn't work quite right on Vista either as NV have not bothered to update it..
