On the face of it, the RAC looks like a better deal. Any opinions?
    Thanks in advance.

We've done this several times recently.Try and search for it. My vote goes to the AA

Can't you join the AA/RAC on the roadside? i.e. post breakdown.

Not for the AA anyway. You have to wait at least 24 hours between joining them and getting them to call out.

Sorry Unkel, the search function wouldn't work last night for me - firefox issue perhaps? And having read all the threads I could find on it this morning, it appears AA have more vans on the road the RAC in Ireland.

In addition, things have changed in the past few weeks, according to the AA guy who came to assist my mate in the UK on Wednesday. She was bringing a classic back to Dublin and the head gasket blew between cylinders 1&2.

People were abusing the system, so they have tightened up on a lot of things. You have to have several weeks under your belt before you can call them out, you can't upgrade your membership at the side of the road and then use the new benefits then and there, and so on.

The call centre in Lyon contacted the guy and berated him for going above and beyond the call of duty.

They reminded him he was "targetted" and had to cut his losses on this job. It appeared my mate was covered for a tow to Holyhead, but Lyon checked her policy thoroughly and got back to the guy and told him to drop the job immediately. In fairness to him, he argued with them, and rang his immediate boss and did his level best for us.

All fair enough, IMHO, but it might factor in when making a decision between companies.

Isn't AA being bought over again, by more venture capitalists? If so, I doubt customer service will be their no. 1 concern...

Have been a member of both in the past, never had to use them (touch wood) and am now trying to ensure my insurance policies have breakdown cover.
