Quick Insurance question

I want to change my car less than 1 year into my first policy. If I bought a new car now, with the same insurer, would I still entitled to a NCB from the time I started my policy? Or would changing car now nullify that i.e. would I have to wait another one year from now to get my first NCB?

no 1 year after you took out the policy on the first car is when you get your NCB changing car wont affect it.

What about if I cancelled my policy (and applied again) to take advantage of lower rates for newcomers? The insurance company are rather vague on this.

Nope you lose your NCB. I was gonna do it last year but decided not to.

I had a punto and was paying 90 oer month for insurance, with about 4 months to go i got a fiat brava, same engine size just newer so better safety etc, anyway for the remaining 6 months of my policy my insurance went from 90 per month to 160. If i had went online to get a new policy i would have had to pay a 50euro cancellation fee and be back at 2 years ncb but my policy would have been only 800.

I now drive a 1.8 thats only costing me 700 a year, the renewal they sent out for the brava was 800....

Surely that wouldn't work? I mean, they'd still have you on the books as an ex customer, so you probably wouldn't get the newcomer's discount anyway... Like bill pay phone deals that are "subject to first time connection" - you can't get the deal again if you leave the network and go back...

I rang around recently looking for a renewal quote, to try and beat the one from my insurer, and I think it was Axa who told me that they rated Puntos one class higher than similar cars

    It's a flipping Punto!

Even with one year's NCB I was getting quotes higher or comparable to when I went shopping last year.

Here'e the text of a previous thread I responded to that gives information on how to avoid loosing NCB years.

Remember that NCBs and NDDs are only recognized by Insurers in one year, discrete units (ie if you cease being named at 2.5 yrs, you will only get 2 yrs NDD) and in continuous time (if you’re named on a policy for one year, take a break for a few days, then get named for another year, you will only be recognized for 1 yr NDD and not 2 yrs).

As far as I’m aware NCBs and NDDs usually expire after 2 years of being idle. This may vary from company to company, but I’d imagine they’re all similar. (You can ring a company to find out).
