South America

My friends and I are thinking about heading to S.America for 6 weeks. Our plan at the moment is to arrive in Rio; head to BA, then fly to La Paz to acclimatise for the Inca Trail.

Just wondering whether people who have spent a similar length of time there, believe that this plan is viable? I am unsure as to whether all our plans can be achieved within the timeframe. Would we just better of staying in Brazil/Argentina?

I was also wondering, how important is the acclimatisation for the Inca Trail as I have heard a few dodgy stories about Bolivia.

We would be grateful for any advice!

I've done a lot of research on South America, will be going there on Tuesday.
Don't have time to write a big reply but; remember Inca Trail i=f you're going to hike has to be booked bout 3 months in advance. Yes Bolivia is dodgy (roads etc) but looks amazing. Loads of people I know who have gone to SA have called it their favourite country. You get a better feel for the countries if you stuck to 2/3 but Brazil and Argentina are (relatively) expensive.

Im planning a trip to S.America and based on what I've researched I imagine you'll be quite pressed for time. Are you flying to BA? Also check the availabilty of the Inca Trail, places are quite limited so this may affect your plan. My pass requires me to be in cusco 3 days before the trail plus 4 days for the trail itself. That would be a large chunk of your time. However you can visit the ruins without the hike- that could be an option for you. Book the trail directly with the trail companys themselves rather than usit- I saved €100 this way. I guess it really depends how much time you want to spend in each place you want to visit. If you've limited perhaps flying into Bolivia may not be worth it- from what I've read buses are a disaster and its very difficult to plan you're time there. Perhaps fly directly to Peru?
