Hey guys I hope this is the right place to post this
But I downloaded 3 pictures of limewire (yes I know completly stupid and now im paying for my mistake) they've saved to my desktop but they seem corrupted of some sorts, they wont open but most importantly they wont delete or move, I can't drag them into other folders like the recycle bin and when I right click them delete is not a option and when I click edit nothing happens

Is there another way of deleting files ive tried add and remove programmes but that didnt work
    Please and thankyou

First thing, is your anti-virus software up to date? It needs to be if you choose to use Limewire.

Secondly, re-boot your pc, press F8 before windows starts up(just after bios) and choose the option to start windows in safe mode. Try to delete the files then.

have you tried to restore to a date prior to the download?

what operating system are you running?

as you said Lime Wire is a no no, i find it to be similiar in many ways to a virus, so remove it and do a virus scan

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,176 ✭✭✭1huge1

ya im staying away from limewire from now on it was very stupid, im using XP, i restored to a earlier date but it just reverted to old settings the files were still there

    Ill try safe mode now
thanks guys ill get back to ya in a few mins to tell ya how it went

tried to delete in safe mode but safe thing happened wouldn't delete
please tell me you have another solution

Try and delete the pictures through Dos. You need a Dos boot disk and then just navigate to where the pics are stored and type del picturename.

The delete comand only deletes the links to the file and makes that space available to save stuff :(
But it doesn't actually overwrite the information in the space so maybe you could try deleting that info.

You could try erasure it's a program that repetedly overwrites the space taken up by the files you point it to.
    http://www.heidi.ie/eraser/
Is the version I've used before

    Or File Washer
Kind of like erasure but you can choose what you want to write to the space
(like overwritting with another file or oputting in all 1's or something)
    http://www.download.com/1-abc-net-File-Washer/3000-2092_4-10586622.html

Best of luck and if you can't figure out how to use one of them give me a shout :p

Another way would be to boot up a Linux Live CD of some sort and delete the files through that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,176 ✭✭✭1huge1

May or may not work but try

    Start
    Run
    (type) explorer
then click on your desktop, when you get the list of files there right click on the offending file and select properties, down the bottom of the box that comes up you will see attributes, make sure the read only box is not checked and then try to delete from there !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,176 ✭✭✭1huge1

properties is not a choice with these files

Try downloading Spybot and using advanced mode, then go to the secure shredder and try to delete them.

If that doesn't work, you can always, download an Linux Live CD (with NTFS Read/Write support and burn it and boot it up and delete the files with it. If it doesn't have the right permissions, use sudo chmod 777 filename.

    Do this

Please download the self-extracting version of HijackThis from here:

    HijackThis_sfx download

    Save HijackThis_sfx to your desktop.

Double-click the file then click the Unzip button. Then close the Self-Extractor window.

Using My Computer/Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Program Files\HijackThis and double click on HijackThis.exe to run it. If you would like to make a shortcut for your Desktop so it's more easily accessable, right click HijackThis.exe and choose Send To > Desktop (create shortcut).

Please run the extracted HijackThis.exe from now on. Delete any copies of HijackThis.zip that you have saved.

Open HijackThis and click Do a system scan and save a log file. Copy the entire contents of that log and post it here

Try Unlocker, it's never ever let me down.

Click start-> run, the write "cmd" and hit enter.

Then type "cd Desktop" and hit enter.

Then type "dir" and hit enter.

look for the names of the files you want to delete. If one is called "my really long filename.ext" you should then type (exactly as follows): del "my really long filename.ext"

That should be able to remove em.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,176 ✭✭✭1huge1

I cant use unlocker because when I right click on this file my only options are open, edit, preview, print, open with & send to and half of those don't work like I can't edit it or move it somewere else

trying your idea mutant fruit but when I type cd Desktop into the cmd it says that its not recognized

Your DOS path to your desktop would be like this:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Name\Desktop

So you would type the full string

    Well it's not a spyware issue :(

Few things you should do though

Run HijackThis, click "Do a system scan only" and check these entries in bold

    O9 - Extra button: Related - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm (file missing)
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Show &Related Links - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm (file missing)

    Then click "Fix checked"

You now need to update your Java and remove your older versions.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components.

    * Click Start > Control Panel.
    * Click Add/Remove Programs.
    * Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE) in the name.
    * Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE), and install it to your computer from
    here

Your using an old version of Adobe Acrobat Reader, this can leave your pc open to vulnerabilities, you can update it here :
    http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

Also go here and update to Service Pack 2 or else you are going to leave your PC extremely vulnerable to spyware

Your DOS path to your desktop would be like this:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Name\Desktop

So you would type the full string
tried that and this came up
documents is not recognized as an internet or external command, operable program or batch file
