    Hi folks

I'm looking for a cheapish set of speakers for the Optical socket in the back of my playstation - Are there standalone speakers with an optical lead or is there some sort of adapter to connect regular speakers to an optical socket?

    Cheers

It doesnt work like that ,
The optical connection is a multichannel line out , which has to be fed to an amp , decoded and then fed to speakers , you cannot directly connect this to speakers.

There are amp/decoder speaker sets that you can get , but this connection always goes to an amp/decoder before speakers.

Something like this , and that would be about what you could expect to pay as well.

Cheers - thats a bit on the expensive side

I'be queried this over on the playstation forum but I am having problems getting the sound from the console to the tv. There is only a DVI input for the picture on the tv so I have had to use an HDMI cable from the playstation , through an adapter (DVI-HDMI) to the tv. Problem is DVI doesnt carry audio.

I have also tried to connect up the standard analog cables (red and white) to the tv aswell but no success.

Dont suppose you have any ideas?

What type of TV do you have ? Are any of the inputs labelled as audio in ? Is there by any chance a co-ax or small 3.3 inch input jack that might take a signal that would be labelled as SPDIF?

    Thanks for coming back

The TV is a Philips FLAT TV 23PF4321
    The inputs are
    Power
    Aerial
    Scart
    DVI socket
    Red,White and Blue input
    S-Video
    Headphone Jack
    DVI audio in

I have pics up in the playstation forum (sry not sure how I input a link to that)

    Cheers

Ok the DVI audio in looks like either a mini coax or a mini toslink , if its a mini toslink , then buy a standard optical cable and this

    http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?ModuleNo=29296&doy=9m6

And you can connect the optical out to the DVI audio in connector on your TV and you should have sound.

If its the first option then get something like this

    http://www.maplin.co.uk/Search.aspx?criteria=optical%20to%20coax&source=15&SD=Y
Which along with a coax cable will get sound to your TV.

This of course assumes that the optical on the PS3 is active when the HDMI/DVI is being used , havnt checked that myself, but it should be in the manual.

Just to let you know - I bought a Y-adapter in Maplins - and plugged it into the DVI In socket and when I plugged in the red and white cables to it..success!

    Thanks for your help

Just to let you know it is possible to get a pair of speakers with the amp built into them:

Speakers like that are generally referred to as monitors. Sorry, didn't mean to be pedantic! :o
