    Hi,

I'm not great on a windows pc, so imagine my dismay when I was given aMac to work with, given that I have zero experience with one! A quick question. I went to listen to Today FM online with it - it asked what app. should I use, I guessed quicktime which was obviously wrong. Problem is when I click the link again the Mac has assumed I want ot use quicktime instead of offering me an alternative.

How do I get around this and what program should I use?

It's windows media so you'll need to download Flip4Mac. Here:

    http://www.flip4mac.com/

I still had problems getting Todayfm to work though. So maybe try getting Windows Media Player for mac, it might be better for streams, but be warned it's a piece of s**t.

I think if you look for Windows Media Player for Mac on the Microsoft website they point you to Flip4Mac because they are discontinuing WMP for Mac

Yeah I know but it's supposed to still be good for some streams that Flip4mac can't handle. It was always a terrible program though.

Lads, even if he downloads these programs that still won't solve his problem. The Mac will still attempt to use QuickTime to pen it as he has selected this program for use in future.

He wants to know how can he change the preferences so that the Mac won't attempt to open with Quick Time again.

I love Macs but am not great with them so I can't answer I'm afraid. :)

    It doesn't matter. Flip4mac isn't a program, it's a component/plugin that allows Quicktime to play WMV.

Okay, but how about providing the OP with the information so that he doesn't have to post another thread in the future if this kind of thing happens again? Or if you don't know how to do it then that's fine. :)

Is there anyone there in the office you can ask?
What Mac is it? Do you know what OS is running on it?

WMP should override earlier settings during installation http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/mac/mp9/default.aspx

The default app can usually be changed in a file's Get Info window. Although in this case once Flip4mac is installed it should play wmv right inside your browser.

Windows Media Player - yuck!! How could you violate a beautiful Mac with it.

I'm using a Real Player plugin with Camino to listen to the Today Fm stream, always works for me.

Thanks for the help - I was looking for something the Mac may already have - downloading apps. usually results in a prompt to enter the network admins. password. :(
