50mm lenses

    Hi All,
Looking to get a 50mm lens for my D80. The kit lens covers 18-135mm and is decent enough but the fastest it goes is F3.5 at 18mm. Was thinking of getting the F1.8 50mm lens as it's cheap and everyone raves about it, but was also thinking I might like the extra stop on the 1.4... But for triple the price though?

Anyway, was looking around and ringing a few places, nowhere seems to have either in stock, a few places saying Nikon can't keep up with a recent surge in demand. Anyone know where does have them? Would like to get something soon enough as I may be doing some gig photography next week and would prefer not to have to use a flash...

I got one (50mm 1.8) in Conns cameras a few months ago for about 135 Euros. Its a great lens, its hardly off my D50. Not sure if they have any in stock at the moment though.

Is this for a full-frame digital? Because account for the 1:1.6 crop factor with a 50mm. I bought one for my film camera years ago, and, although it's now a 75mm on my 400D, it's just incredible.

A fixed lens really helps to focus your attention on the subject matter of what you're shooting. By limiting so many options, you can concentrate on what counts which is capturing incredible moments.

Jessops usually have a few of them in for around €120, check there website cause they'll match they're UK price if its cheaper....
Also, although its cheaper the 1.8 is sharper in the wider apertures than the 1.4.... your really paying for the extra stop and a nicer lens body

I got one in Berminghams last month after waiting 6+ weeks for it to come in. Very handy to have, great clarity etc, and I'm using my D200 even more than ever with it on. Pity about the crop factor though, might have to look at investing in a fast 30mm or something.

Yeah, was thinking about the crop on it too, but the next one down that most places seem to have is a 35mm 2.0, and TBH the aperture is far more important to me than the wide angle for gig photos... It's Berminghams I'd normally deal with for non-online stuff, but they're saying another few weeks at least for either... Tried a few more places, all saying the same thing :(

I tried to buy a 50mm f1.8 nikon in Ireland a couple of months ago and couldn't get it anywhere. Ended up buying one from one of the HK shops on ebay :)
