Should I pay to post faulty goods back?

Bought two small items from an Ebay seller, one of which didn't work. When I contacted him he was great, asked me to try a few things and when it still didn't work he said he'd send a new one. It arrived in a few days (yesterday) and it did work so I mailed him to say thanks and left positive feedback. He asked me to return the faulty one so I said I'd check the postage cost (Irl to USA) and if it didn't seem like an unreasonable amount, given the total for auction and shipping was $16, I'd send it back, otherwise I was inclined to just bin it. Then he came back and said if I pay $5.99 I can keep it (the faulty one), otherwise he wants it back.

Seeing as he's the one who sent the faulty goods in the first place, am I being unreasonable thinking of either telling him to fupp off or else pay me the postage to get it back?

almost every other online retailer such as komplett for isntance, the shipping is up to you. At the end of the day, you paid for goods which instead of collecting, you asked to have sent to you. Things happen, stuff can be faulty. You might have more of a case if they sent you the wrong item in which case its their fault completely.

I doubt you have a real case so its up to the seller. If they are based in the US they are not subject to any rights you have as an Irish or EU citizen.

I paid for working goods and paid to have them sent to me. It took the seller two attempts to complete our contract.

I'm not going to cry over a few € postage but I'm asking about the principle.

I'll ask Ebay what their POV is.

eBay's policy will be whatever the seller had stated on their auction. Most (all) sellers say that returns are your own cost, even if the item is faulty. To me, that's a fairly sh1t approach as sometimes the return cost could be nearly as much as the item itself and as such wouldn't be worth your while returning.

Check the original auction, if it says the return cost is yours to bare then that's the way it has to be as you agreed to that term when buying.

I've been hit by this in the past returning a DVD set, cost €9 registered to UK out of the €50 I had paid originally. 20% loss to me for some gobsh1te who sells sub standard items as new. Paypal and eBay don't care either.

Well if you had filed a complaint with eBay or PayPal you would have had to send the item back to the seller in order to get a refund as that is how the process works.

Out of principle if I were you I would want to return the item, the seller after all did not have to send you a replacement but he did. He did you a favour by not forcing you down the complaint route and as such I would like to return the faulty item... of course this does depend on how much it costs. Like I would not be paying the cost of the item to send it back or anything and if the cost is too much offer the seller to pay for return postage then throw it out if he declines. There is no other comeback he would have.
