if you want tabs and lessons try www.ultimate-guitar.com.
this page http://www.chordbook.com/guitarchords.php shows you how to play chords, i would advise to start learning chords, then try to play a few songs with the chords you learned before moving onto something else..... by the looks of the guitar you are probably into metal!!

metal indeed, thanks for the links. there sure is alot of cords to be learned
any paticular ones that is used alot and should be known first? (first guess would be majors)

the majors and minors, if you can play G C and D, and change between them, there are thousands of songs which you can play, which just use those three chords (ie cash - ring of fire, first song i learned!). when you want to move on from the basic chords, and onto more 'rock/metal' types of guitar, you will need to learn 'power chords'. An easy way of learning power chords is to learn any greenday song. you probably hate them as you are into metal!!! any song of american idiot..... they all use power chords (the whole album is just the same 4 or 5 chords over and over again!!). also the rythm for metallica - for whom the bell tolls, uses power chords. the verse is pretty slow which makes chord changes easy for a beginner.
    Hope this is a help!

Yep. E, G, C, D and A major as well as E minor and A minor are the most used group of chords. Learn those and you'd be shocked at how many songs you can play :D

    hi irish

    learn some full chords,
i fell into the trap of learning power chords first
and playing that way for a couple of years,
then i had to go back and learn normal chords
    when my music tastes evolved,

I know you will want to jump in and get "metalling"
but leave a little time to learn other things too,
you will be well pleased in the long run,

i dont know what type of metal you are into
but things like sanitarium by metallica
are great to play as they are easy and sound great,
when you get that, "one", and "fade to black" are practically
the same notes, the cool slow bit in master of puppets is basic chords too,

also, the drop D tuning thing IMO is bad news for newbs,
I learned all my metal stuff in standard tuning and it helps a lot with your
ability to form and slide chords quickly,
i know guys who grew up using drop d one finger stuff and they
    cant play for sh*t

get a few tabs and learn some songs you really like
and it will keep you interested,

I started learning when I was 12 and went to lessons
learning stupid songs, "row, row your boat" and nursery rhyme sh*te,
needless to say i gave it up, until i was 18 and got renewed interest.

all the best - stick with it - its a great thing to have in your life

well i dont plan to change the tunning. got a tuner so it will stay set to whatever the tuner tells me is tuned.

    http://www.chordbook.com/guitarchords.php
i take it full chords are the major ones right?

also if you look at bm you see 1 and it on another strong with a line.
does this mean i have to swap it before i get the whole way across?

sorry if this sounds stupid, but i really dont have a clue lol.

got a tab from one and used the cord site to set up the first part alternating bm and gmaj7 seemed to sound right enough

If you are serious, there's nothing like learning on an acoustic with metal strings to build up your strength. Switiching to an electric after mastering basic chords, scales, plucking and strumming on an acoustic will feel like velvet.

srry dublin but I am not getting an acoustic too.

vengeance ty for that link, that site has really helped and he can be funny too, watch him trying to get the plek out of his acoustic lol

Don't think this sight has been mentioned: www.justinguitar.com
You'll need broadband to view the videos. He goes over the basics and explains things very well. Ultimate Guitar is a bit of a mess IMO. Lessons written by people there tend to not be too explanitory and there is often some kind of mix up. Then you get 100 comments for the lesson with people argueing over how things should really be...
The above sight should be good for a beginner. It helped me. ;)
