I know nothing about Astronomy, just to let ye know.

Anyhoo, got trapped on the roof terrace of my apartment and had to wait for an hour for my flatmate to let me out (it's a long story) but I noticed what seemed to me to be an unusually big and bright star. It was basically in the south-west direction and was very low in the sky. It was so bright I thought it was a plane. I spent an hour looking at it and vowed to find out what it was. Any ideas?

What time of the night did you notice it?
Jupiter is prominent in the South at the moment.
Saturn & Venus (& Mercury if you're lucky) can be seen in the West.

South West? that would be Venus. Jupiter is in the South East, both are around the same size, brightness in the sky.

I agree.. Possibly Jupiter if it was in fact slightly East of South - not to insult your knowledge of the Cardinal Points ;) It is very bright in the sky these days (competing for attention with Venus in the West)

This chart shows the position of objects in the sky Tuesday night at 23:00

Venus is quite high and towards the northwest really, at this stage. It is visible while it is still bright, as the sun is setting. Jupiter is rising by 10pm and is still low towards the southeast. It moves westwards and rises as it does so. Both are very bright. I presume your directions are slightly askew and it was Jupiter that you saw.
