Maintaining Transparency

    Hello,

Bit of a tricky one here, I have a bitmap of a logo and i need to change the colour of the text which is fine and dandy but unfortunatley i can not seem to remove it from its background in Illustrator so I have taken it into Photoshop to remove the background just leaving the text.

How do I then get it back into Illustrator while maintaining the transparent background ?

Drag it in. That is, presuming you have used a new layer in Photoshop and obtained transparency that way.

Was the original illustrator file a bitmap or a vector image?

Im not too sure although I would presume that the original was a vector and that this is a high res version of that vector as a bitmap

Im going through all this basically because the logo is mostly a font and it looks quite jagged at the edges despite its high resolution and I am attempting to get rid of those edges, I have tried auto tracing and while it gives me the desired effect i can not get the desired colour of white without a black background appearing behind the image

i will try the dragging in anyway, although i do think im probably going at it the wrong way and that with a bit of correction in my methods tracing is the way to go, cheers gordon

If the logo is mostly just a font you should be able to replace it with vector text and even manaully trace the rest with the pen tool. Maybe post up the picture and we can have a go at vectorising it. (or a similar image at least if you don't want to post the logo).

Might make a good tutorial for Illustrator too.

if you dont know what font it is try using whatdafont.com then you could type it up new in illustrator, as bitmapped images are really the worst possible thing you could use for a logo

Yeah I really have no idea why he gave it to us as a bitmap eps in the first place, will try out a few things and if still stuck will post up logo or something similar

When you request someone to give you the original artwork in vector/illustrator format and they don't really know what you mean then they will automatically give you a jpg/bmp imported into an .ai file format. That means that they don't have access to the original artwork - so you either have to press them for the original or do some monkey work to recreate the original.

You can mess around with layer blending options in photoshop to dull the surrounding background away while placed over the thing you want it to appear over. Or you can manually vectorise it yourself (or find the font as mentioned).

I say stick it up here too and we can either give you pointers or someone can quickly do it for you, I can do a quick and easy vectorisation if you need.
