Obviously there are quite a few places to stop on this route(the coastal route) and stay but im wondering where are the best places to stop, i heard Carmel is nice but its kind of too close to San Francisco as in i owuldnt have really made any ground if i stayed there a night....

What about Cambria? Santa Barbara, is their much to do? is their beaches? is their a night life? any places that I should/shouldnt stay?

    Thanks in advance

I drove the entire west coast a few years ago on my J1. I went from San Fran to Santa Barbara in the one day....and then from Santa Barbara to San Diego the next and then San Diego to Mexico...

I spent most of my Summer in Santa Barbara, I was staying in the party town Isla Vista and went out a few times in the strip in Santa Barbara, it has good nightlife and they are all absolutely minted there. I saw Michael Jordan out one night...

Santa Barbara is a gorgeous place and there is great scenery especially in the Hills...

But why don't you drive along highway 1? One of best views in the world...miles along amazing coastal scenery...not to be missed.

don't think there's much in cambria from what i remember unless u want a retreat in the forest. i'd say santa barbara is yer best bet...you've got nearby santa ynez valley for a nice drive (sideways winery area). san luis obispo is nice especially if it's a thurs. as there's an evening market in town and it's very lively
