    This annoying...

Just tried to update my bios there on an Asus P5B-E Plus with AsusUpdate... and whilst it successfully "installed" the new bios, the verification process failed and my motherboard is now a sheet of useless crap.

Any suggestions about what to do? I'm also a wee bit worried about my Vista OEM installation. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

The asus motherboards have a "crashfree bios" feature.
If you place the support CD that came with the motherboard into the CD drive during boot time, it should try to restore an old bios.

Alternatively place the .ROM file onto the root of a CD or USB key.
It's in the manual on the Asus web site.

    Nope, didn't work at all.

From what I've heard, CrashFree NEVER works. Ugh, the thought of installing a new motherboard is a pain. Turns out a lot of people have had problems with AsusUpdate and the P5B series.

Try removing any PCI sound cards, etc you have in the system. If I remember correctly ASUS have released a couple of dud BIOS updates that didn't work with add in cards in the system. It's shocking to see that some manufacturers are practically beta testing BIOS updates on customer machines at this stage.

If that doesn't work and the board is still under warranty RMA it on the grounds that the manufacturer shipped a dud BIOS update and that the BIOS recovery feature doesn't work.

clear the cmos? pull out the battery and put it back in?
remove the psu power to the board aswell for a while
