Sultan Ibragimov became the wbo heavyweight champion on saturday night when he outpointed shannon briggs-Now all the belt holders at heavyweight are east europeans, and the old saying of the great white hope is gone, its now the great black hope. who;d of thought it?

Rush Boxing club and Rush Martial Arts head coach.

I had expected Sultan to win(and on points) , he's a decent boxer with quick hands and can put combinations together .

Briggs is 50 lbs overweight with too much(steroided imo and most other peoples) muscle . The only thing he has left is a punch and fairly quick hands but since he can't throw combinations that limits the advantage of having quick hands .
He can't fight effectively past the 4th and pretty much throughout the fight he is ineffective . I was disappointed Lyakhovich allowed himself to be beaten by Briggs .

It was a good thing Ibragimov won as his camp may be willing to match him in unification fights , where as Briggs(who had King) would have never been put into one .

I don't like to bring colour into things but lets not forget Sam Peter is fighting Maskaev next and is the favourite . But it's not a black fighter than is being looked for , it's an American . Right now Oleg Maskaev(American citizenship and considers himself American) is the closest thing they've got .

    Heavyweight status:
Maskaev is defending his WBC title against Peter , with the winner to face Vitali . All 3 would be open to unification but Vitali will not fight his brother .

Wladamir Klitschko is defending his IBF(and IBO) title against Lamon Brewster , Brewster is one of the 3 men to beat Wlad . It is rumoured Wlad will face Hasim Rahman if he wins this fight , but now that Sultan has won I expect a small chance of unification there .

Ruslan Chagaev(WBA champ) is with the German promoter Kohl . Kohl is unwilling to negotiate with either Klitschko due to a former dispute between them . Kohl is also notorious for protecting fighters , however Chagaev has faced decent opposition so far , and Kohl seems to have believe in him . Chagaev will probably make a few easy-ish defences and if Kohl believes one of the weaker champs are there for the taking(possibly Ibragimov or if Maskaev is still champion) otherwise the only way Chagaev will be matched in unification is if someone else has all of the other 3 belts .

Sultan Ibragimov(WBO) is with Warriors promotions , the same men who manage Edison Miranda and they are developing a name as risktakers . However two other promotion companies(including Golden Boy) have a piece in him and may want to hold him back . Warriors will look for unification and will probably target Wlad , if they are allowed get their way .

Ah the Cubans , so much promise that never materialises .
Lets see how Odlianer Solis , Yan Barthelemy or Yuriorkis Gamboa do .
All show massive talent but are Cuban so will have to fight their natural urge to underachieve in the pro ranks .

Maybe Juan Carlos Gomez can make something of himself again .
