    Hi, A lumbar puncture is the correct term for a "spinal tap". It basically involves a catheter being inserted between the spinal vertebrae in order to collect a sample of fluid. It is almost the very same as the method used to administor an epidural during labour. A very small sample of spinal fluid (cerebrospinal fluid) is collected through the catheter and sent for analysis. The procedure usually involves sitting or lying in the fetal position, and the area of your back cleaned with a disinfectant. The doctor will most likely also use a local anesthetic such as lignocaine (similar to that used by a dentist, or when getting stiches) to remove any discomfort from the procedure. It doesn't take too long, and shouldn't feel any worse than a slight pressure, possibly even less than that of a normal injection.

    Hope this helps, and good luck.;)
    Dave

    Hi folks, Just thought i'd let everyone know i've been for the Lumbar Puncture Yesterday Morning ,I was very nervous but need'nt have been the staff were lovely and i was soon at ease it was done in my room on one of those electric beds that moves up and down, I had an Anesthetic of some kind administered and slept through the proceedure itself,about an hour or so later i was up and thankfully no headache. Today i'm a little sore like my back is bruised but apart from that i just have to take it easy for a few Days, By the way I came home last night, Hopes this helps anyone who may be going for the same and Heard lots of HORROR stories ......its not that bad;

    Glad it went well for you. :)

    I had one done in my early teens, local anesthetic only and I still have vivid memories.

    Hope your results are o.k.

    Looks like you probably have a CSF leak ^

    After lumber puncture you should stay flat on back for several hours without moving, that helps avoid the CSF leaking, if CSF leaks, it causes a headache like you describe.
