    Hi guys

    Thanks

SKY HD will work with any HD Ready TV, the sky box can provide a HD signal via the Component or HDMI connections, most HD programs are in 720i or 1080i.

    720p do you mean?

Well here is what I have can you just check if that is suitable?

    From Sky's site...

I've heard there are two HD formats. What's the difference between them?

That's right - the two HD formats are 1080i and 720p. The first, 1080i, increases the number of rows in your TV picture to 1080 and is interlaced - ie first the even rows are scanned, then the odd ones. The other, the 720p, has 720 rows but this time they are progressively scanned. This means that every row of pixels is shown in every frame.

What format will Sky HD broadcast in?

Sky HD will support both HD formats: 720p and 1080i. Broadcasters and programme-makers will choose which format is best for their programmes and your Sky HD box will display the format that best works with your TV.

Will the 1080i format produce a better picture than 720p because it offers more horizontal lines?

Not necessarily, because some types of programme are best suited to 720p, while others look better in 1080i. Sky HD will support both 720p and 1080i to allow programme makers to choose the best format for their programmes.

So your plasma is fine for Sky HD...

Sorry yea 720p, the TV will work with SKY HD but you will need a HDMI to DVI cable like http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=322184

Can the Sky HD box use the component cables. The 3 video and 2 audio HD component cable?
I'm getting Sky HD and I already have a PS3 taking up the HDMI slot, so I'm hoping it can use component.

You can use component but the quality will not be as good as HDMI, why not get a HDMI switch.

Tony, Component can provide the same quality I have used both component and HDMI from my Sky Box to my HD projector and you wouldn't notice the difference at either 720p or 1080i.

Well its subjective I guess but component is an analog standard whereas HDMI is digital

It's just more wires and another plug behind the tv.

That's correct, and only HDMI supports HDCP which is an encryption that will be used by programme content providers (i.e. studios) in the future to prevent HD copying. Sky initially said that 2 years down the line the component connection on the Sky HD boxes would be discontinued.

BTW, I've had Sky HD since June last year, and no channel has broadcast HD in anything other than 1080i. This is with the box on automatic resolution setting.
