    it all varies but in

prague: beers 50cent a glass, if you go to the right places, ie local not nightclubs, meals anything from 5 to 12 euros for an excellent meal, stay off the touristy streets, go somewhere where you don't understand the menu, that will be cheap and an adventure

    bratislava: same as above

Budapest: beers are like 1.50 and meals same as above, stay away from vaci utca or anywhere near oktogon

we're budgeting for €40 a day in eastern europe, do people think that would be enough?

    depends:

    Accomodation:
couchsurfing will save you 15 euro a day on average, hostels are between 10 and 15 euro a night

    Food:

Breakfast- 2 euros in the supermarket
luch- 10 euros if you eat out 3 euros if you buy stuff from a supermarket
dinner- proper meal between 6 and 12 euros

    Drink

depends upon the person and the place, remember you can drink in public in most of what you call eastern europe, don't let the locals hear you (if they understand you) saying that!

anything else i can think of i shall get back to ye

i would imagine it is relatively cheap to buy drink in a supermarket over there so we will just get tanked up before we go out, just wondering do you have any other expenses, such as nightclub admissions or anything else

also what exactly is couchsurfing? ive heard of it but dont really understand

Couchsurfing.com and Hospitalityclub.org are websites where you can find people that will let you sleep at their place for free. You can choose whether you will offer people to stay in your place or not as well. I´m not a member of couchsurfing so I don´t know exactly how it works but HC has been great for me in my travels. You get to do things and see things and meet people you never would if you were just staying in hostels. However, I´ve only used it when I was travelling alone. I think with more than 2 people it might be more difficult finding people who will offer to host you.

i know that many clubs in prague have admission costs but they are only like 4 euro, budapest well it depends: if you go to an alternative club it's cheaper and no entry fee but if you go to the equivalent of a hungarian redz or q bar you're going to be paying admission

budapest is the cheapest out of all them options. u can get a good meal for a lot cheaper than the price mentioned above. getting cans is also a cheap option before u go out. carlsberg was about 50 cent in krakow if i remember right. anyway enjoy, eastern europe is great!!
