I'm off on holidays with the Mrs to NY later in the year and meeting up with my sister and her boyfriend who will be holidaying at the same time.

Anyway my sister is a professional musician and is looking for a new 12 string acoustic. She thinking of buying one when in New York.Does anyone know any good shops there?

Her budget will probably be around a couple of thousand dollars.

Try the Guitar Centre on west 14th St. between 5th and 6th avenue. I was in New York in April and stayed with friends a two minute walk away. Its a great spot, you could spend a day in there trying everything out. You dont get a salesman in your ear the minute you pick something up which is a bonus. Another good one is Manny's around 43rd St. I think and Samash is directly across the road

The legend that is known as Manny's Music FTW...and good luck on trying to take back any musical instrument as hand-luggage on your chosen airline.

    Thanks.

I think my sister is going to declare the guitar on her return flight.

Tand good luck on trying to take back any musical instrument as hand-luggage on your chosen airline.

I had absolutely no problem taking my guitar on an Aer Lingus flight as hand luggage in June 06. As far as I know, they are now charging extra for instruments.

Take a look at this thread. It describes my guitar Odyssey in New York last year.

The guitar centre on 14th is awesome, that's where i bought my tele. The place is huge and has a good selection of absolutely everything.

Sam Ash on 48th is also good with a large selection of acoustics. Mannys doesn't haven't as big of a selection.

As for bringing it on as hand luggage, i didn't have a word said to me at any stage and put it in the lockers above the seat, there's plenty of room. I just made sure i didn't have a huge bag either to carry on.

Was that in a gig bag or a case?

I've bought 2 guitars in Sam Ash's, brought them back with Aer Lingues and Delta - no problems with luggage...

hard case, i was surprised also... As i was walking onto the plane i was waiting for a stewardess to say something along the lines of 'let me take that and put it away', no one batted an eyelid.
