Women find Drink Drivers a Big Turn off!

RSA & Commission for Taxi Regulation Issue June Bank Holiday Advice

A nationwide survey of 300 women has found that over 9 out of 10 women find men who drink and drive a major turn off. They literally wouldn’t be seen dead with them because 88% see them as ‘killers’ and a massive 92% would never accept a lift from a man who had drunk alcohol.

The survey of women’s attitudes towards drinking and driving was conducted by Lansdowne Market Research on behalf of the Road Safety Authority. The results are being released on the eve of the high risk June Bank Holiday weekend which has claimed 31 lives since 2000.

When asked what impressed them most in their ideal man, the survey shows that 92% said ‘having the guts to say no to drink driving’ made a man very attractive in their eyes. In fact the majority of women said this was more important than having clean underwear! (86%), a good sense of humour (78%) or wearing trendy clothes (41%).

One young woman interviewed as part of the survey said “If I found out that my fella had been drinking and driving, he’d be history. Anyone who drinks and drives is a loser.”

The survey also found that drinking and driving was a bigger turn off than guys who smoke (70%), drive a ‘pimped up’ car (59%) or binge drink (56%).

When asked to describe men who drink and drive, over 9 out of 10 women labelled them as ‘Stupid’, ‘Shameful’ and ‘Selfish’. 88% of women described men who drink and drive as ‘killers’.

Commenting on the results Mr. Noel Brett, Chief Executive, Road Safety Authority said, “To anyone thinking of getting into a car with a driver who has drunk alcohol, don’t! - do you really want to place your life in these guys’ hands?”

Mr. Brett continued, “I want to make an appeal to the one group who have influence over young male drivers – women. That’s mothers, sisters and girlfriends. Try and talk some sense into your men. Tell them that the way they drive causes huge stress and anxiety for their family. That if they are not prepared to change for their own sakes, well then to do it for their family.”

Drivers are urged to plan ahead when going out for a drink. Leave the keys at home; get a taxi, minibus, public transport or take turns to designate a driver.

“People who want to enjoy their bank holiday weekend to the maximum should plan ahead,” commented Kathleen Doyle of the Commission for Taxi Regulation. “Use a local taxi or hackney service if you are going out and having a few drinks. Also, do your best to pre-book your journey home. This will make things a lot easier for everyone. Taxis and hackneys are the only 24 hour public transport services in Ireland and people should take advantage of this over the coming weekend.”

This bank holiday the RSA is supporting the enforcement activity of the Gardaí who will be conducting extensive mandatory alcohol testing checkpoints over the weekend. The message for drink drivers is that the chances of getting caught and losing your licence are high.

    Studies have found that:
    • Driver/ rider alcohol is a factor in 28% of fatal crashes.
    • 90% of drivers who die in drink driving related crashes are male.
    • Alcohol could be the main contributory factor in 2/3 of single vehicle crashes

A total of 138 people have died on Irish roads to date in 2007 a drop of 29 deaths compared to last year. Since the beginning of the year, 55 drivers, 33 passengers, 36 pedestrians, 9 motorcyclists and 5 pedal cyclists have died in fatal collisions.*

For those intending to travel by road over the coming bank holiday weekend, the Road Safety Authority has the following advice:
    • Always drive at an appropriate speed for the conditions and circumstances
    • Never drive while impaired by alcohol, drugs or tiredness
    • Wear a seat belt and ensure all passengers front and rear are wearing theirs too
    • Plan your journey in advance and set off as early as possible to avoid heavy traffic
    • Take frequent breaks to avoid tiredness / driver fatigue
    • Be extra alert. Watch out for vulnerable road users. When on holiday drivers have a tendency to relax their guard and be especially alert if driving on unfamiliar roads around your holiday destination

    Ends

Unless you're Jim McDaid in which case you can get re-elected as a public representative following your conviction. Or maybe there's a quota worth of boy racers in Donegal who just though McDaid was deadly?

Corrected to something more appropriate for this forum ;)

Disclaimer: While the Brethren heartily endorse the over-consumption of alcoholic beverages, at no time should this be attempted while in the possession of a set of car keys. These should always be given to the non-drinking wimmins with you so that they can take you home later.

i don't believe that report. i have seen too many women happy to accept lifts from guys who are pissed.
It all great for them to give high moral answers from their high horse to a questionaire but 9/10 of them will happily get in the car.

Yep, you would have to see the survey to actually see what was asked and how it influenced the outcome. Many surveys are done like this, a teacher asking school kids if they take drugs in one country, then kids are asked in a disco anonymously in another country, so it appears one country has low usage and another high.

No doubt this was a "tick box" survey. There is no way people were asked "what is a turn off in men", and 92% said "having the guts to say no to drink driving". If the surveyor is somehow involved it would have a huge influence too i.e. if the surveyor had told them a family member was killed by drink driving people would be more likely to give a more anti drink driving view.

If they were offered the lift while pissed in a pub they are far more likely to accept than what they say sober in a survey where somebody might pass judgement.

Dunno what the survey was supposed to show, was there a rumour that women went for drink drivers or something? and was there a survey to find if men were attracted to drinkdriving women?

That is rubbish. The women will say what they think is the right answer when they get questioned but the reality is very different.

I suspect drunks (male or female)will get into a car with a drunk driver (male or female). Sober people will make alternative arrangements.

This survey could well be taken in a room full during a meeting of the "Association for women who are bitter over being injured by a drunk driver or had a friend or relative killed by same, while also being tolerant of dirty underwear, bad puns and occasional nudity, of Ireland".

"Get the nightlink and get some love" is the suggestion, I think.

It's all wrong though, because the biggest turn offs for women, the world over, are:
    1) tall
    2) dark
    3) handsome
    4) rich.

Avoid those 4 things and you're in like flynn.

Things are finally going my way. *Slicks back the hair and tells the first woman he sees that he would love to nail her in the stinkhole* :D

This is a serious (albeit heavily replicated) thread. Ergo, the replies so far are aren't on topic and the thread itself isn't in the spirit of this board.

    Lock.
