In case a sudden unexpected wave catches you unawares:

Great shot. I'm still waiting for the wave with my name in white water :-)

I love the shot, but I fail to see how a filter would help. If the lens gets wet, dry it. If the camera gets soaked then a filter will do nothing. If it gets knocked over by a wave then a filter is not going to save it. If it gets pulled out to sea then a filter is not going to save it.

    Truly nice shot though :)

I had a polariser on the lens and I was glad I did. I was happier wiping the salt water off a replaceable filter than off the delicate front element of the lens itself. Positron: no timer or tripod. Just standing there taking a nice straightforward shot from the rocks when..whooosh! I didn't see it coming.

The front of most lenses are not weather sealed. Salt water inside your lens is not going to be nice!! While the filter threads aren't going to be water proof, they're gonna do a lot more good than harm ;)

Maybe I'm becoming convinced though.....Not for the faint hearted.

Most importantly, if you really wanna protect your camera, don't take it anywhere, and never get an action-packed shot like that one.
