Tesco currently have cases of Holsten and Carlsberg Export 330 ml bottles for sale at reduced prices.

I had a closer look at the box and bottles this lunchtime.

Carlsberg Export bottles states that it was brewed in Copenhagen AND Northampton.

The Holsten box states that it was brewed in The EU for an English company, can't remeber whether it was Carlsberg. What do Brewed in the EU mean??? sounds very weaselly, was this brewed in Germany or not?

So, are these the genuine articles or the dreaded "Brewed under License" ****e?

the carlsberg isn't brewed in denmark, nor is the holsten brewed in germany.

    Thanks.

I think I'll try and grab a few cases of Warsteiner instead.

These beer offers are a real Caveat Emptor job.

Some of the carlsberg is only 3.8% and only 275ml. Holsten is only 5.0%

Stella (UK) is €17 for 24x330ml 5.2% in obriens.

Ever notice that for a place with such large floor space, Tesco has such a crap range of beers. There a small Centra on Westland Row that has a better selection of beers than most Tescos.

I made my first trip to Clarehall recently, the giant 24-hour Tesco, and was curious to see what their beer section was like. It was basically the same as Tesco on Baggot Street or Merrion, more of the same (usual bud, guinness, heineken, cheap stuff like dutch gold and a few foreign imports), but stacked much higher and wider.

Staggering, isn't it? But that's all they think the market will support.

The worst bit IMHO is that the beer market in the North has been similarly cornered by a handful of macro brands, yet Tesco in the North carries a full and varied range like the rest of the UK. I've had Northerners who wouldn't normally dream of buying anything but their cans of Harp tellling me about the great ales they got in Tesco and how it's changed what they drink. It's infuriating.

Carlsberg is brewed in Denmark and Ireland according to the last crate I bought (and the adds)

EDIT: seems its brewed everywhere from China to Israel so looks like the Danes have nothing to worry about, whatever's brewed in Denmark probably doesn't leave Denmark

That Carlsberg Export is a very fine beverage.

I find Carlsberg and Miller to be both bland beers. Miller is particularly sweet and fizzy. I met some Danes recently who were bemoaning the fact that Carlsberg had dominated brewing in Denmark, like Guinness/Diageo here.

Another off-topic point about Miller, whatever you think about its taste, they did an amazing job marketing it over here. It almost has a classy image in Ireland, especially when it first came out and was only available in bottles. Whereas in the States, its got a much more trashy image.

Until 1998 Miller was imported and not marketed particularly heavily. When S&N began making it in Cork and selling it on draught the big marketing then kicked in.

Carlsberg are quite a bit more dominant in Denmark than Guinness are here. Royal Unibrew are the only real competitor. But at least the Danes can be comforted that both companies are actually Danish-owned.
