Best way to store and stream video files?

    Hi folks

I've been using the wiresless network in my house for downloading video files from my PC and onto my laptop. But this is taking up 10mins just to download the file and then I've to extract it into a temp folder.

The files are all stored in a .zip format and have to be extracted. Is it safe to extract the files on the PC and store them that way instead of leaving them in .zip format?

Even when I have the files extracted onto a temp folder on the PC, it still takes time to transfer it across. Also I tried to just play it with VLC and MS Media Player but it gets all choppy. I think it needs to buffer it but it wont buffer enough  Is there some way I could stream the video across the wireless network easily? I was going to just set up a local webserver and website to stream the video across that through the browser. But this involves extracting the video from the .zip and I'm not sure if they will then get corrupted easier. I do like the webserver idea :D Never set one up before tho!

Is there a reason why they are stored in a zip format? What type of video files are they?

I store avi files (mostly divx) on a server and stream them wirelessly to my laptop, works fine. Remember that a wireless connection is not as fast as a wired connection, so copying files will be slower, but you should have a fast enough transfer rate to stream a standard avi file without major interruptions.

Yeah it's fine to extract the files and store them on the pc. On the whole getting them to your laptop. The webserver is a cool idea but I've never done it (some day though) so I don't know what it would be like re effort wise and if it will solve the problem of choppiness (doubt it would) but consider getting an external hard drive much handier for portability. There are also one that you can plug into your tv and watch the videos on the tv.

Got the server setup. Even works for mates over the internet. They can stream videos but albeit very slowly. Over the local network its sweet. Absolutely perfect. Ill have to stress test it with the 3 laptops to see how it goes.

Theres a lot more work to get it the way I want it. But basically I can have a webpage with links too all my videos. The user then clicks the link, popup browser, then buffers for a few seconds and plays.

If you use VLC you can tell it to Cache 2000ms or so of video for watching over a LAN, sorts out any problems we have in our house with the 100mbps wired connection.
