Well it seems you will be limited to staying in the North of Germany and since you are going to Berlin from Amsterdam I would poberly recommend you to go to Cologne. Its a pretty nice city. To say the least. The Catherdial is nice is just beside the main station.

Theres a nice waterfront area down by the Rhine but cant remeber what its called. EL-DE Haus is the former Gestapo HQ is worth a visit. You can catch a night train to Berlin from the main train sation meaning you can utilise your time in each city you vist. The night trains are the best way to get around Germany.

Make sure to head out for a half day to Potsdam in Berlin. Its very pretty but a little bit strange.
Also Heidelberg is meant to be one of the nicest cities in Germany and I'm paying it a visit in two months time.

If your going to take a flight might I recommend taking in some of Southern Germany. Freiburg is one of the nicest cities in southern germany the night life there is second to none. Sightseeing is pretty good as well and the locals are good fun.

If you do go down that direction make sure to check out Cathedral Square and thr Munster which is very beuatiful. Its been about 4 years since I have been there used to go over quite a bit as my brother lived outside the city.

    Heres some info from wikitravel
    * Münster (Main cathedral) is, next to the Black Forest, the main draw for Freiburg, one of the oldest and most beautiful in all of Europe. The gargoyles are not to be missed - be sure to study every corner of the Munster. Make the effort to climb the to the top of the tower for the fabulous views. Every day in the morning (until 1 pm Mon-Fri, 1:30 pm Saturday), except on sundays, there is a market on the square surrounding the church. Go on Saturday mornings as it then will be the biggest and nicest. Lovely assortment of vendors.
    * Bächle. The city is crisscrossed by small canals in the streets of the inner city. These canals used to be the irrigation system of medieval Freiburg. But don't step into one (or do!) as legend has it that anyone stepping into a Bächle is deemed to stay in Freiburg and marry a Freiburger.
    * Schwabentor. One of two remaining old city gates.
    * Martinstor. The other old city gate. Interesting here is the location of the only McDonalds in the inner city of Freiburg. There are also a Burger King and a Subway in 15 meters range.
    * Altes Kaufhaus. It is located on the square surrounding the Muenster.
    * City halls(old and new). They are about a five minute walk from the Muenster.
    * Seepark. A man-made lake and a popular escape from the urban housing estate of Betzenhausen. Complete with beergarden and a restaurant, Seepark is popular with families and those planning a walk around the stunning green-belt area.

    Also a link for photo's http://www.badische-seiten.de/bild/freiburg-altstadt/

A hour south of the city is Basel in Switzerland which is also very nice. The police staion in basel is worth a look. Also its a city that is in 3 countires France, Germany and Switzerland which makes it even more interstering.

I stopped there for 2 days on my honeymoon (visiting other cities in Germany), it really is stunning. You won't be disappointed. Views and scenery are breath taking. I only wish I had spent a few more days there.

Lived in Cologne for a year. Very nice city. Not a huge amount of sightseeing though, as the city was pretty much completely rebuilt after the war. Alot of pubs and restaurants. I think more per square kilometre than any other city in Germany.

Relaxing by the Rhein with a Koelsch, doesn't get much better than that. The population is about 1 million, but the city itself is very condensed and that coupled with the excellent public transport means it's very easy to get around. I'd recommend a day trip to Bonn too (about 30 minutes on the train from Cologne). You can visit Beethoven's birthplace and the University grounds are very nice when the weather is good. You can do a cruise along the Rhein between the two, but you'll have to book in advance. I just turned up on the day and got laughed at.

Trains can be expensive but you can get cheap tickets. If you are willing to take the slower RE or IC trains instead of the ICE and book a non-flexible ticket then you can get some good deals. It's a really well run system and you've never long to wait for the next train. They used to have the schöneswochenende tickets a few years ago where up to 5 people could travel within Germany on the one ticket during the weekend for only 50DM using the slower trains. Don't know if it's still around but worth checking up on. Germany's a big country and if you are travelling between cities on a bus then expect long journey times.

I would second jjbrien on Freiburg. I spent a summer working there after college and it was lovely - "Gateway to the Blackforest". Munich is great too. I think lots of places in Germany are very cool but there seems to be a funny perception about it that stops people going which is unfortunate. Have a good time whatever you decide!
