    EMBANKMENT ROAD
    QUALITY BUS CORRIDOR SCHEME

    Pursuant to the requirements of the above, notice is hereby given of the proposal to provide the following scheme: Embankment Road Quality Bus Corridor Belgard Road junction to Cookstown Road junction.

    The Greenhills Road Quality Bus Corridor forms part of the QBC Network that will link to and provide interchange possibilities with both the existing orbital QBC at Cookstown Road and the proposed south city orbital QBC linking Tallaght with Blackrock. The scheme consists of approximately 1160 m of QBC in the eastbound direction (to city centre) and 945 m of QBC in the westbound direction (to Tallaght). These bus lanes will be implemented as part of the Embankment Road Extension Scheme (Belgard Road to Outer Ring Road Phase 3) which is currently being designed. The sections of bus lane are proposed as follows:

    Eastbound: 1160 m of bus lane from a point 215 m west of Cookstown Road junction to Belgard Road junction.
    Westbound: 945 m of bus lane between Belgard Road junction and Cookstown Road junction.
    The Scheme has the potential to provide considerable benefits for public transport users on the route as follows:

    There will be significant time savings for a large number of bus passengers.
    As the number of general traffic lanes remains unchanged, there will be no significant impact on journey times for general traffic.
    There will be no negative impact on cyclists.
    It will link to and provide interchange possibilities with both the existing orbital QBC at Cookstown Road and the proposed south city orbital QBC linking Tallaght with Blackrock.
    Plans and particulars of the proposed development will be available for inspection at:

    (a) South Dublin County Council Offices, County Hall, Tallaght, Dublin 24 between the hours of 9:00 am 5.00pm Monday to Thursday and 9.00am - 4.30pm on Friday,

    (b) County Library, County Hall, Tallaght, Dublin 24 between the hours of 9.45am-8.00pm Monday to Thursday and 9.45am - 4.30pm Friday and Saturday,

    From Tuesday 15th May 2007 until Wednesday 13th June 2007.

    Written submissions or observations with respect to the proposed development, dealing with the proper planning and sustainable development of the area in which the development would be situated, may be made in writing before 4.30 p.m. on Wednesday 27th June 2007 to: -

    Ahhh How I just love those colours.......;)

    I have wondered long and lonely about WHO is rtesponsible for the original design of "The Embankment Road" as its known to SDCC.

    Living in its proximity since it was built has allowed me to ponder on some things......:confused:

    It`s primary function,presumably,was always to link Two of Dublins largest Industrial areas,Ballymount and Cookstown,with each other and with the M50 Motorway.
    Cool sez the plain people...wat a good idea....:)
    Now,Industrial Estates tend to be....well...kinda...Industrial in nature and as such attract a lot of...erm....."Industrially" natured traffic...
    Sorta things like well....Trucks....Little scut-trucks.....Ordinary Trucks....Tipper Trucks....and Articulated Trucks,all items which demand SPACE ? :cool:

    Now class,hypothetically speaking...If YOU wished to link TWO large scale Industrial Areas with each other and a major motorway what form would this link take...?
    A 2 lane ordinary R class roadway.
    A two lane R class roadway with special provision for .......TRUCKS.
    A 4 lane roadway with climbing lane on the steep uphill stretch linking the estates.

    In our case we got the first option to begin with and thus began an eternity of tinkering and fiddling which has never ended and is as unsuitable today as it was when it opened...... :o

    All I can think is of SDCC and the Dept of the Environment paying staff described as Professional Planners or Roads and Traffic Engineering Professionals at a rate far in excess of these peoples worth.....How do I claim a refund of my contribution towards funding mediocrity.....? :eek:

    The canal cycle route looks good, especially burying those 100kV cables, bloody eyesore, necessary of course, but an eyesore nonetheless.

    These bus lanes are all to be welcomed (when done properly). I work on Grange Rd and the Green Route seems to be taking shape there. Does anyone know, will this stretch be incorporated into the proposed Tallaght-Blackrock QBC?

    Why oh why are SDCC creating new QBC's when half the ones they have carry a "bus lane not in use" sign because govt haven't given dublin bus the promised buses.

    white elephants perhaps ?

    would it be better to give dublin bus money to buy buses so the existing lanes get used and then based on the traffic reduction from that demand that the govt provide the buses

    This is likely to be 90-100% DTO money and they will be working on the km of route done basis, not the time saved basis, no doubt.

    Another Bus Lane that starts in the middle of nowhere and goes nowhere. It'll be grand for all those people who like to skip the queues that the rest of us sheep wait patiently in:confused:

    Well Sir,just to clarify the entire business of how many "New" Buses and why they are not being seen out on the roads of Dublin.
    As of today Bus Atha Cliath currently have 11 seperate route licence applications with the Dept of Transport.

    These applications date back...wait for it.....to Sept/Oct 2006 !!!
    As demanded by good management practice,they were mostly made in anticipation of the new additional fleet enhancement.

    Once the application is submitted to the Dept of Transport there appears to be no means of checking on its progress.

    The two major Route Applications relate to Swords and Adamstown via Lucan services.
    It seems that the Dept is Privy to an objection by a private operator in west Dublin which is before the EU Commission in relation to the broader issue of Public Service operational subvention .

    This pending objection to the EU has it seems trapped the Dept of Transport in its glare,with NO official willing to risk taking any decision lest it refelect poorly on their career prospects.

    In the meantime there are up to 70 new vehicles and associated crews all expensively recruited and trained largely underutilised as they await the Depts recruiting of a Senior Administrator who is willing to Administrate.

    The issue of the issuing of the Licences is now one of the Public Good.
    The issue of the EU challenge relates mainly to central policy and the requirement for profitable operations.
    These to me are NOT connected and in no way should be allowed to delay the new routes any longer.

    Let the Challenge go before whatever EU forum decides these matters where it will either be upheld or fall.
    If it is successful then we move on to compensation and whatever new arrangements need to be put in place.
    Equally if the objection is struck down then the services continue as before.

    Either way the Dept of Transport cannot be allowed to abuse its responsibilities for much longer.
    The Dept`s brief is Public Transport Operations and does NOT revolve around the far broader one of competition and EU policy.

    Perhaps the only way to solve this will be by way of Judicial proceedings which could direct the Sec General of the Dept to issue those licences forthwith...and allow the Public to reap some benefit at last from all the much hyped T21 investment.
