As all you VOIP folks may have seen http://www.enum.ie is open for business

And what a rip off.. "The cost of a domain is EUR1 per month plus a validation fee, currently EUR25 payable on first registration". So who's going to fork out this cash for a service the VOIP providers do not support. ENUM is completely pointless unless it's hosting large quantities numbers..why is this not a free service...it's only a feckin DNS. Yet another stumbling block to VOIP adoption..well done lads. (I'm only surprised a certain ei*com are not involved)

For those of you who don't know what enum is, it's a central registrar for numbers which allows translation to a SIP uri, or email address...etc.. The idea is you can be contacted in the IP domain without having to bridge across to the traditional phone networks. so for example, if someone were to call your mobile from a VOIP phone then the provider would check in ENUM before routing the call, if you have a VOIP uri attached to your mobile number (which is in the ENUM database) then can call would be routed VOIP all the way. To see an example of a FREE enum service check here - http://www.e164.org/

In practice you need people to actually enter their numbers - do you know of anyone who is going to pay €25 + €12 per year (per number) to have it in ENUM (especially when there are free ones, ex. e164.org, which have better support from VOIP providers).

A central 'official' ENUM needs broad support from VOIP providers, what would make sense would be when you get your number from a VOIP provider it would automatically be entered in ENUM for FREE - but when entering the number in a DNS costs more than actually owning a number who will do it... ?

And how can comreg justify handing over this task to a company who will charge such ludicrous fee's. 1c per month would be a more appropriate fee.

It's rubbish, it should be FREE full stop. It's a barrier to VOIP being adopted.
