Firefox automatically tried to update to v2.0.0.5 today but when it was nearly finished and I had restarted the browser, I was prompted that the was a file that couldn't be overwritten, and that the installation failed... Can I stop the program from upgrading? When I close it and reopen it now, it will prompt the error message every time, and the version Firefox is still 2.0.0.4....

You can stop it from asking for updates. Go to Tools->Options->Security and under the Update tab, untick the box beside Firefox on Automatically check for updates.

Guess 2.0.0.5 is the latest one from today since I got an update request this AM.

Thanks for this! not trying to be smart, but Tools/Options/Advanced/Update was the correct path... ;)

getfirefox.com is reporting 2.0.0.4 as the most recent version, and I only got prompted to install that last night. I just did an update check there and got nothing back.

Oh I'm most sorry... Update from 2.0.0.3 to 2.0.0.4... My apologies.
Anyway, it still tries to install the updates now every time I start the browser... Can I do anything to stop it? I already clicked the Install now button, not the Later button.

Thats alright then, I was going to suggest AV and malware scans if that hadn't reported properly :)

In the mean time, try downloading the file from that site, uninstalling FF and reinstalling using the new installer.

See if, when you close Firefox, there's another firefox.exe process running in Task Manager. There's a class of Trojan that infects Firefox, and splits off a child process that does the damage. A friend of mine got caught by something similar recently .. nasty one with a keylogger and everything.
